PhilippinesGLOBE or SMART for ROAMING?
QUOTE (Sheriff Uling @ Jun 12 2008, 04:22 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My wife and here friends here in the states still use their SMART accounts with unlocked GSM phones and it works out just fine. I would say that it also depends on what carrier your family primarily uses. For my wife it's smart, but I would presume that globe works just fine also. Oh, you are going to need your family to load minutes into your account.

Cheers!!!

Sheriff Uling

p.s. With smart, my wife's family can eLoad minutes into her account. My last point of reference with my wife is that glode does not have that feature/function. I'll double check with her and update this post, if I am wrong.

hmmm.. my fam's using globe but then if i need to use smart we'll just buy smart sim for the extra phones at home..
thanks for the info.. blush.gif

I have to leave my phone (Globe) in the Philippines and now using AT@T with a $39.99/month plan.

My family has a separate ID which is 24hours logged in to yahoo SMS so I just text them thru the computer if I have an important message or they text me using the same. I also call them using a rechargeable calling card( LAYA), same card my husband used to call me when I was still in the Philippines. I talk to them every weekend thru yahoo using the call services which is actually better now so its all free. So far, it is good.

that's the reason why im considering globe for roaming tho peeps say they suck.. unsure.gif
i mean i wanted to maintain my globe number.. blush.gif

I am using Smart Roaming...i loaded it 100pesos when i left philippines last april and never reloaded it again since then. Globe needs to maintain 100 p or else ur roaming service will be blocked. I sent Shaun Globe roaming sim while i was in the philippines. It so happen that i forgot to load it and after 1 day that the balance went below 100, the connection was severed. My dad is also using Smart roaming in Saudi arabia..it is more than a year now with out reloading and we can still send him messages. I tell my family to text me in my smart number and i reply back to them with my number using CHIKKA. (chikka is free and u can reply with ur phone number). smile.gifsmile.gif

i see.. thanks for the info.. blush.gif

PhilippinesI am wondering why the exchange is so bad?

Seryoso ba kayo? (are you people serious?)

In simple terms, exchanging less of any currency for the dollar is always better. As an example, you're an affluent Filipino who wants to go to Las Vegas to gamble away your money. You want to carry the equivalent of 10,000 USD cash, so you withdraw the money in Pesos. In the example below, which is a better proposition?

10,000.00 USD = 444,599.99 PHP
United States Dollars Philippines Pesos
1 USD = 44.4600 PHP 1 PHP = 0.0224921 USD

10,000.00 USD = 500,000.00 PHP
United States Dollars Philippines Pesos
1 USD = 50.00 PHP 1 PHP = 0.02 USD

With the lower Peso rate you will need PHP 55,400.01 (1,246.064 USD) less.

Since I'm not an Economics major, I don't know how the lower PHP:USD would affect the Philippines on a macroeconomic level. But it does seem evident that it would be an advantage to the Filipino when buying US dollars.

exactly!

PhilippinesI am wondering why the exchange is so bad?

I work in retail (musical instrument sales and instruction) and we definitely have not seen any great recovery in our part of the US. I have noticed whenever gasoline goes up the dollar goes down vs. peso. I think disposable income in the US is at an all-time low, at least compared to the past several decades.

OH, I miss the good ole days of 50+ PHP to the dollar!

I wish the Philippines economy was going up enough to explain the change in rates, but I just can't believe it.

uhm.. if u dnt know yet.. if $1 = P50.. that means philippine economy is doing really bad!
just means peso is losing over dollar!!! do some research..
envy_meFemalePhilippines2010-09-04 18:08:00
PhilippinesI am wondering why the exchange is so bad?

Unfortunately, I think it's more the US economy going down, rather than the Philippine going up, that is causing the poor USD exchange rate. So, relatives in the US are able to give their loved ones back home less buying power...not a good thing.

LOL! it's the same thing! it means peso is winning versus dollar.. if you analyze it, when US economy goes down, philippine economy goes up.. don't confuse yourself..
and it's actually not "less buying power"! if you have an economy class during high school or college, you would know that when the economy continues to go up, it will result to prices going down..

a lot of filipinos complain when they send money back home and they see that the peso conversion is very low.. what they don't understand is-- it's a very good thing for the philippines!

PS: i work at a remittance center here in the US so i know..

It is expected that filipina would be rude to you. She is the bestfriend of your hubby's ex-wife. A kind of attitude that majority of women would do irregardless of nationality; stick with their friends and be nasty to the other woman. No brainer here.

i would have to agree and disagree with you on this one.. i agree the we support are our parents when they're old.. BUT i disagree to call it dependency
..
i think you can call it dependency when abuse comes to the scene, this is you saying you think the word dependency has a negative connotation

That leaves two choices, you either thought he was putting a negative connotaion on it
or you felt he didnt understand the nuances of the english language and you therefore explained it to him.

my original post was not addressed or a reply to you but il go ahead and clarify a few more things anyway..
i was using the word "you" as a general word tryin to explain something. it was not directed only at him (rlogan)!
i was more tryin to say that the philippines is a family oriented culture..
being family oriented should not be confused with being overly dependent individuals..

PhilippinesFilipinos and saving money for retirement

I am stuck in this situation now here in USA. My mom lives 30 mins away. I have to support my mom. All of us kids do because my parents divorced a decade ago and she has no form of income and doesn't want to work. Why work when you have 4 kids who you can extract money from each month. Her health is so so but she's able to work if she wanted to.

So pretty much I'll be giving around $300/month (I was paying $700/month for the past 4 years) to her for the rest of her life and so will the other siblings.
Children should not have the responsibility nor obligation to support their parents. We didn't make the decision to be born. We didn't sign up for anything. My mom should be ashamed at the situation but she has no shame in any of this :(

I'm too proud to do something like this  I don't really want to rock the boat so thats why I just fork over the money each month.

that's your opinion.. but it's not how it is to us..
in our culture we do have responsibilities to our parents..
if our parents cant work anymore then we have to help them.. and that's just how it is..
and if the situation is like what u said that she doesnt wanna work, that's a totally different story..
also for us, helping is not just about giving money..
like for example if they dnt have place to stay, we dont rent a place for them nor let her be live on her own..
we let them stay in our own place even if we already have our own families..
i know it's hard for you guys to understand how things for work us that's why i said our culture has so much effect on how we act..

if i think the he's putting negative connotation when he used the word "dependency" then i wud have said "you're wrong" instead of saying "i disagree".. <_<

envy_meFemalePhilippines2010-12-14 20:52:00
PhilippinesFilipinos and saving money for retirement

The Filipinos do have a culture of dependency upon the children to support them when older.

I'm not interested in making value judgements. That's just something different about their culture.

For some it seems to work well enough.

i would have to agree and disagree with you on this one.. i agree the we support are our parents when they're old.. BUT i disagree to call it dependency..
i think you can call it dependency when abuse comes to the scene, like they ask you for more than you can give or more than what they need..
i would like to call it more of a "responsibility".. we filipinos support our parents when they're old because we believe that we owe so much to them..
our parents raised us, fed us, sent us to school, etc etc.. so when they're old, it's our time to take care of them.. kind of a payback time..
in the philippines, we dont send our parents to the nursing homes or assisted living facilities because we feel and we know that it's our own responsibility to take care of our parents..
here in the US, most people send their parents to these nursing homes or assisted living facilities because they're too busy to take care of them..

well, what im tryin to say is filipino culture has so much effect on how they act..
a lot of filipinos dont save because they know they will be taken care of by their children when they get old..
a lot of filipinos couldnt save because they help their own families and their extended families..
and it's true, a lot of filipinos dont save because as much as they want to, they cant! because what they earn is just enough for their needs..
so to OP: i wish u realize how filipinos and u are soooo different.. so u CANT compare how things are and how they work..

fiance/e (K1) visa means your're getting married in the US not in the philippines..
if you're gettin married in the philippines then it's K3 or IR1 which are spousal visas..
