CanadaSSN Office Fun
It wasn't a big deal, only waited 3 hours. Got to the window, gave my ID. She scanned it, entered my paperwork into the computer and generated a receipt saying they will verify my status and then mail me my SSN card.

I was hoping I'd get the number today but I guess not.

CanadaOff topic - Wedding officiant is a jerk - must vent
It took Sara and I forever to find a guy who would do things our way. I was VERY VERY picky with the text since I am an Atheist and she is Christian. So I wanted to remove any reference of God or Jesus or praising or heaven all that jazz. There was one line that we kept in "in the bible it says that marriage is..." and it went on to say something about a holy union. I don't have a problem with that sort of thing... it says it in the bible. It doesn't mean I agree with the religion. In star wars it says the emperor is evil. Just a fact. Anyway you see my point.

We as people know what we want. You know what you want. There's NO reason you need to waste your time with someone. Or put up with his stupid comments and jabs. If someone made a comment like "oh whats wrong with you canucks" or something of that nature I'd reply with "the same thing that is wrong with you yanks". I no longer put up with arrogance and stupidity - I can't handle it! lol

In the end it is your wedding. So make it happen the way YOU want it. No compromise, no give and take. Just the way you want to remember it.

CanadaFlying to US -- border tips please
I must agree with all of the above comments. I entered once without the best intentions in mind, but at the last minute I told the officer the truth instead of lying (as I had planned). He didn't seem to care and let me in. I have a feeling he would have had a problem with me if I was sweating and studdering etc.

Sara has never been to Canada, although she lived in Wisconsin for a year or so and hated it. So I can only assume she would hate my home area.

I would like to go back but I doubt even I could live there. The weather the people the environment... it just isn't me anymore. We have talked about the UK, but who knows.

Canadastaying in us for almost 6 months while waiting for visa approval
There have been a few topics on this and I've mentioned I get stamped every time. Others say they never have and others say half the time. My POE have been Peace Arch / YVR (Vancouver airport) and I've been stamped B2 (in pen written as previous poster mentioned). We just say VWP as it is a bit easier than ranting about the separate program etc.

I am just giving EXTREMELY tight advice because I've seen things go great, and bad for people on this forum and when you give dodgey advice on a dodgey situation the result can only be... well I'll let you guess.

Has anyone out there stayed in the u.s. for the maximum 6 months stay (from canada)? If so, did you have any problems at your interview about spending so much time in the u.s. during the visa process?
Thanks in advance for any help.
There is no such thing as OVERSTAYING. There is no limit in the number of months a canadian is allowed in the US. Plus as a Canadian because you do not get an I94 the US has no clue when you depart and only knows when you re-enter. I know guys who are living in the states for years without status and goes to canada to renew Driver l and passport from time to time. My own case i was in the us from , january, March, April and fromMay- november when i went for my Interview. it did not even come up

Do not consider this as legitimate advice. There IS a limit, and it is 6 months of every 12. Snowbirds forums, IOs and anyone you ask will confirm this. As for the in and out... this is HIGHLY subjective. The US has a hard time tracking exits but obviously entries are logged carefully especially if you have a visa (immigrant or not). Living in the US without status can REALLY burn your ### and I suggest if you are reading this to do things the correct way.

In my own personal case when I entered last time they logged my "account" extensively as I mentioned I would be entering/exiting and re-entering. Even though I was a B-2 (VWP to be more specific as I am Canadian) and am fully allowed to enter and exit all I like. But IOs can make up their own mind and flex rules. So as I say do it the RIGHT way.

This will make you feel better:

I came here End of October 2006. I have been in California solid since then. We applied I-130 in april and 485 in June. We didn't know we were supposed to file both at the same time. We have an interview which it may come up at but I have been to 3 infopasses and no one has cared. I even asked during one appointment if it would be a problem... he said so long as we applied in and around the 6 month mark for AOS... normally they don't mind. Just TELL the interviewer the truth if they ask.

If it makes you feel any better, my congressman looked into our case within TWO DAYS of receipt of my request and I had a response in under 1 week. Call and/or send them the form that allows them to look into your case (can't remember the name) and you may be pleasantly surprised.

As for the government... I think it's high time we begin playing the same games with them. Sadly 95% of the US has never felt the effects of the poor management. But us 5% get all of the BS. Hrmmmmm. I guess if it was THAT broken things would change. Or we've become idiots.

CanadaComplicated Tax Question
I have received a W-8BEN from Bank of America. I opened a BofA account in 2004 when I was a student, so a social was not required as I was a non resident. I've made a few deposits here and there since then as I use it as my primary bank account. I received this form a few days ago, and it is saying if I am a non resident I need to state this and send the form back. However since my wife and I have been working we use this account jointly and make deposits without realizing this would come about.

In a nutshell, should I wait until I get my SSN - add it to the account and ignore the W-8 and pay taxes normally... or fill this out and send it back? I am afraid if I do this wrong it may impact me later. I also plan on waiting until after the interview, just in case.

CanadaThe in-laws from heck
Sara's brother lived with us for awhile. He was jobless and broke and needed help surviving so we let him live with us. He didn't pay rent as promised when he got his job so after 2 months we couldn't afford to live where we were so we left.

When all was said and done he owed us $800 for various things, then tried to tell us to f-off etc and yelled at Sara on the phone. Total moron beyond words.

CanadaQuestion about Relocating & CDN perspective
I've looked into every state, every major city and for a lot of reasons. Business startup potential, Police Depts (for me to apply to) as well as schools for kids, my wife and housing.

The best place I found that sort of fit my bill was "Woodstock, GA". Housing is great, schools are decent and it's very mixed racially. Sure you'll get the odd racist shizhead but you get that everywhere.
The other area is the DFW area in TX. I love the idea of Texas but who knows living there.

I am from a beach city on Vancouver Island so I moved to southern California. It's taken a ton of adjusting - the people are about as friendly and as inviting as rocks and there are a lot of differences. I think we all think the grass is greener on the other side sometimes. And then sometimes home is where the heart is (interpret that as you will). Anywhoo this is a half rant so I'll stop now.

CanadaPassport rules for Canadians at the border
The guarantor thing is silly. I was just talking to a few people yesterday about passports (prompted by this thread) and the Yanks I mentioned it to were very confused as to why that is part of the process. Especially on renewals, considering we got one the first time.

Sigh.

the problem is some of us have to apply to renew our passports - or technically, get a replacement passport. You aren't allow to apply prior to 6 months - 12 months in some restricted circumstances - so we are stuck having to wait until the open time frame in which to apply. I am currently waiting for my completed application to come back from Canada where I had to send it to have my Canadian passport holder guarantor sign it and sign the photographs. Geeze, that whole new guarantor requirement may make it easier for Canadians in Canada but it sure sucks for those of us living outside of Canada. It has added at least a month to my whole process. Then when I get it back, I have to return the application along with the passport and all the other documentation BACK to Canada - and I just pray that my photos aren't rejected!! I am glad that they have delayed the new passport requirements because maybe now there won't be so many last minute people panicking to get their passports at the same time I am sending mine in for its replacement.

That's what I was just thinking. If they delay it until June 2009 it will come at exactly the time I need to renew. mad.gif Sigh. "If it's not one thing... it's another." *smiles at the thought of Rosanne RosannaDanna*

Same for me. I am actually hoping we dont have to travel at all from june 09 to june 10, then when I get citizenship I just apply for a US passport and my problems are solved. No guarantor BS etc.

QUOTE (JoeCanuk @ Jan 3 2008, 01:42 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The United States has no authority over whether you can work in Canada or not. Canada gives Canadian citizens the right to work in Canada and the U.S. can't stick their noses in where they don't belong.

However, they might have a problem with daily use of the AP. sad.gif

Right yea exactly I think this is the core concern for everyone. The time of secondary processing, and the overuse of AP. I don't think they will like you guys much! Haha.

He can't work until he's got his EAD, even for a Canadian company, and daily commutes on an AP would kind of give away the fact that he's working.

That doesn't make sense to me...the EAD is authorization to work in the U.S., not Canada. He's worked for his Canadian employer over 5 years, so I can't imagine him having to get a Canadian work permit....he's still a Canadian citizen wacko.gif

What she is saying is that while in the US he can't work period. So he can't do anything. When his EAD comes in he can start to work for whoever he wants in the world. As for the commute.... I am not sure if AP will grant him access back and forth to be honest.

EDIT I should be specific, AP for multiple entries, for work reasons. I am unsure how AP works.

CanadaScary experience!
My dad has worked in retail as a manager his whole life (save on foods for those on the west coast) he has had some doozies. Be very careful. A good friend of my dads stopped a shoplifter that stole some meat. The guy turned around and stabbed my dad's friend with a needle. He died 6 months later from aids.

Personally, I would have walked away and let "David from loss prevention" handle everything. 8.25 an hour is not worth that stress or risk. Personally, I'd only die for about 100 million.
