According to the law, my original citizenship will be lost automatically when I become other country's citizen.

Yes. But how will your original country know? Also you can go back and use your birth certificate to apply for a passport???

It's not necessarily that easy to get the passport for your "old" country renewed.
Germany, for example, requires you to provide proof of legal presence in the US when you apply for a passport via one of the consulates. So to get a new German passport I had to show them my valid greencard. Once you have citizenship you only have a US passport to show. From that it would be pretty easy to spot that you took US citizenship. Not sure what the passport application form asks for when I would apply for a passport in Germany.

I don't think you have to take your hubby. They didn't ask to see my hubby either which was good because he had to go on an unexpected business trip that day. I would have liked to have him there for calm my nerves though whistling.gif

@Stella: where did you hear that? It seemed like a well oiled machine there at the Fairfax office and that they were happy to get people through as quickly as possible.

There is an oath ceremony at 4pm. Not sure if there is one after that - when I asked I was told that they try to have one every 2 hours.

So you should really think hard of which one of the two countries you want to live in from now on, because since Germany doesn't allow dual citizenship, you will pretty much need to choose one or another. You won't be able to do both...

Wrong - Germany does allow dual citizenship... read previous posts

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Well, the thing is that me and my wife plan to move to Europe in a few years, so losing my german passport would be a pretty bad move..... The question still is....do I endanger my permanent resident status by withdrawing from US Naturalization?

Thanks again! And yes, it would be interesting to go to the interview and just say "I'm not interested anymore", but I don't want to waste anybody's time.....I have to find out how to do it by phone or something.

Germany allows dual citizenship. However, it is not automatic. You will have to apply for a "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" through your German consulate and need to have the approval from the Bundesverwaltungsamt in hand prior to taking the oath for US citizenship. I applied for the BBG on 30 September 2008 and the approval was issued on 2 December 2008. Not too bad. I recommend going that route.

The intent of the form is to collect information about you since you became a permanent resident in order to determine if you meet the requirements for filing the N-400. Therefore only count the days outside the country since you became a permanent resident.

Virginia senators are Webb and Warner (note that there is a new Warner now since the old one recently retired). Who your congressman is depends on where you live! Take your pick here: http://www.house.gov..._State.shtml#va

When did that change? Last time I checked it was Mark Warner. Is that still up to date? Or do I have to go back to the website?

The current one is Mark Warner. The old one was John Warner (he retired last month) innocent.gif

The officer asked me 6 questions, read and write simple sentences, went through my file, made me sign some papers, then congratulated me. BUT, unfortunately, she told me that all the people who passed the test today have to wait for a "special" oath ceremony crying.gif Now I have to wait for the Oath letter.

US Citizenship General DiscussionFilling N400 - Spouse's Immigration Status
So you are saying your wife is here on an expired visa and has been for years? Meaning she is here illegally?
I am not sure but for me this sounds like it could impact your citizenship application based on moral character? I know the application is not about her status and application but harboring an illegal immigrant is illegal. Why didn't you make sure your wife has legal status?

Well, Chris keeps asking when I get US citizenship so that we can move to Europe. He's getting a bit impatient with being stuck in the same place for so long but I'm not really a big fan of moving anyway so I don't care  - got to finish renovating the house first!
I'm amazed actually that I have been here for so long already. I got on that plane exactly 2 years ago!!! :luv:

My guess would be that if you are going to have an interview it would be the last step in the process of adjudicating your petition. Same as with AOS. So the biometrics would definitely come before you get the invitation for the interview.

:innocent: yeah, well... they really liked my paperwork at USCIS back then... so much that they just wouldn't let go of it  hoping that this time around it will be a smoother experience!
I'm kinda worried about the travel thing and not having a valid card - that whole stamp thing... sometimes I don't believe that all the airline staff and immigration officers really know how to handle it. I'll have to start travelling for business a lot again starting in September (perfect timing!) and most of the trips will be outside the US.

I'd also try to just walk in and get it done. Maybe you'll be lucky and they let you do it!
I'm still waiting for my appointment letter and as soon as I have that I will run over to the ASC to try and get in the door. :)

I am amazed at how short the lines at our local ASC have been over the last year. I've been doing an internship in the same building as the ASC so had frequent opportunity to observe people lining up for the biometrics. While before the lines tended to wrap around the building and you never could get any parking, now it's only a handful of people at the most gathering in front of the door and there is plenty of parking available. Probably because they shifted half of Virginia immigrants to be processed via Norfolk.
