US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionMedical question
Well, we mailed off the Packet 3 on the 23rd and wrote "pending" for the medical date. Neal booked his medical at the beginning of this week. It's next week, on the 3rd of July at 3:30 pm. Obviously that will give plenty of time before the interview date.

My question, however, is this: Should he email or call the embassy to let them know he now has a legitimate medical date? Or will they figure it out?

My fiance didn't get to schedule his medical today. Can he still send back the P3 checklist tomorrow and just write 'pending' for the medical date until he schedules it on Monday?

Thanks in advance!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionDS-156 question
hi! to anyone who can help:
my fiance is not working right now and we have our interview scheduled for the 26th of this month. in filling out the DS-156 yesterday, i used the example form from VJ. i´m mainly worried about the question that asks about how he will pay for his ticket to the US -- on the example it says ¨myself¨, but he obviously can´t pay for the ticket by himself, so we put my name & myself. is that going to be a problem? should we go ahead and buy him a ticket? or should i write an additional statment saying that i will be paying for his fare? as usual, its always the little tiny details that i worry about and the ambiguity of what they´re looking for. THANKS for any help or advice!!

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionI-134 question
how should i answer question 11 on the I-134 Affidavit of Support?

11. That I [] intend or [] do not intend to make specific contributions to the support of the person(s) named in item 3.
(If you check "intend," indicate the exact nature and duration of the contributions. For example, if you intend to furnishroom and board, state for how long and, if money, state the amount in U.S. dollars and state whether it is to be given in a lumpsum, weekly or monthly, or for how long.

of course i will support him with everything he needs until he gets comfortable here and a work permit. should i just stay that?
thanks!

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresNew-need advice!
No, no homestay requirement.

Hello everyone. Chris and I just got engaged this weekend. He is British, and is here on a J-1 visa. His visa expires at the end of this year. We are leaving in December for a trip around the world, so we will be gone for approx. 5 months.

We have two options: get married now, or apply for a fiancee visa and get married next summer when we return from our trip.

Does anyone know the rules about the first option?? I know he would need to change his status, but how does that process work, and would he be allowed to leave the U.S. for 5 months? It would be nice to get married before our big trip, so that it would be the ultimate honeymoon, but I'm worried about timing. I'm aware of a parole period where he might not be able to travel without advanced parole for 2 years.

Can anyone fill us in and maybe give us some advice to what our best option would be???

Thanks!!!

QUOTE (Matt and Sarah @ Nov 5 2007, 12:17 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
When are you going to Newark? Sarah's POE will be there as well before she connects to Dallas. It will be sometime in March or April for her, we have to sell her house first.

I'd love to hear how it goes.

My husband entered at Newark and it was a piece of cake ... BUT the important thing to understand about Newark is it's in New Jersey and in New Jersey the attitude is "Do what you're supposed to do, do it fast, or get out of my way!" Some would call it rude, we prefer to think of it as efficient. Or in other words, as long as your SOs do what they're supposed to do and go where they're supposed to do, it will be a perfectly pleasant experience. But if they get lost or confused and start causing delays for other people, things could get ugly.

Use your head, follow the signs, and if you have questions ask them as quickly as possible (e.g. not "I'm sorry, I don't mean to bother you, but if you don't mind, I had a question, I was wondering where the ladies' room might be" but instead "Excuse me, where is the ladies' room please?"). And if the immigration guy chats with you (he did with my husband), answer as briefly as possible (like if they ask how you met your SO, just say "online" or "when he was on vacation in England," don't tell the whole story).

Basic manners is always useful, but Don't Hold Me Up is the prime directive. wink.gif

Update on the canned haggis and our American Burns Night:

1. The stuff-your-own-haggis [into a parchment casing] kit worked wonderfully. Looked realistic and didn't split in the double boiler or when stabbed.

2. The sirloin beef haggis was excellent, the vegetarian haggis was a bit under-spiced.

3. Everyone was really into it and had a great time.

Are you talking about rutabaga? I've seen real turnips at organic grocery stores and the organic section of some supermarkets. good.gif

What's called a turnip in Scotland is called a swede in England and a rutabaga in the US.

What's called a turnip in the US and England is called a white turnip in Scotland.

I'm glad we discovered this before I made the neeps and tatties!

Any of you having Burns Night in the US? It's a real pain, it's illegal to import real haggis so you can only get canned or one that's made in the US. We found a British site that had an American manufacturer but they still charged £30 (yes, in pounds) including shipping for the small one. We finally ordered from these folks, they send you canned haggis and an artificial casing to stuff it yourself. Hope it works. We ordered it in vegetarian and then a few cans of real haggis for people to sample. (Neither Gareth nor I eat meat.)

United KingdomHow did everyone meet?
His choir was touring the East Coast and I read about the concert online ... I was more or less unemployed at the time and was going to anything that would get me out of the house, and the concert was only like 15 minutes from my house. Then it turned out all the physical publicity materials for that concert had gotten lost in the mail, so there were only like 6 people there. They (the choir) invited my friend and me to go out to dinner with them afterwards. He spent the meal hitting on my friend and his flatmate spent it hitting on me.

He'd already started considering looking into a temp work visa (J-1) for the US because he wasn't getting anywhere in his field (music administration) in Britain--one of those things where you need experience to get a job, but you can't get experience because no one will hire you. And again coincidentally, the company that ended up hiring him for the J-1 internship was really near my house also (out of like 6 cities he'd looked in).

We ended up getting married rather unexpectedly while he was here on the J1.

It's weird... her profile says she's Venezuelan, but her Spanish is just like she learned it as a second language. She does not speak Spanish, at least not fluently... it might be just a bluff or however you can call that. IMO!

Interesting....

Actually, my son, who speaks pretty fluent Spanish (Spain Spanish, not Mexican Spanish) thought it was Catalan Spanish...

Wonder why he doesn't know that Spanish and Catalan are two entirely different languages, then? They're no more the same language than Spanish and Italian are. Actually, Italian is more similar to Spanish than Catalan is.

I translate letters from people who are uneducated in Spanish (even though it's their native language) all the time, and there's something a tad off about this post, but I'm willing to go so far as to say she's not a native speaker. It could be a lack of familiarity with expressing herself over the Internet, for example. But I do feel there are some weird structures--uneducated Spanish tends to have a lot of spelling errors and run-ons, but read out loud, makes perfect sense. This is a bit choppy, yet perfectly spelled.

Sorry, Catalan is not THAT different... I think they share the same rank, LOL.

And if you read it loud (knowing the language pretty well) you may understand perfectly what she means, but it is not first language, for sure. Starting with something so simple as "quitar" used as if it was "to quit", they are totally false cognates. I know a lot of Hispanics who have lived for a long time in the US are using verbs like "to quit" (quitar) and "to apply" (aplicar, like for a job), but this isn't supposed to be one, my guess. It could be someone who was already an immigrant in Venezuela (since it appears as the OP country). It's weird, right?

Where did she use "quitar" to mean "to quit"? I only see it used in "va (a) quitar el hijo", "is going to take away my son," which is certainly something I've heard over and over from Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence who are afraid to leave because "dice que me va a quitar el niño". "To take something away" is the primary meaning of "quitar", and "to quit" wouldn't even make sense there. You can't say "he says he is going to quit my son."

Okay, I was wrong: Catalan is more similar to Spanish than Italian is, but less similar than Portuguese is. (89% similarity with Portuguese, 85% with Catalan, and 82% with Italian.) But thpse are still four separate languages! The official languages of Spain are Spanish, Catalan, Galego, and Basque. And if you think those last three are dialects of Spanish, obviously you've never heard any of them.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusSo.... how are the driving lessons going?
QUOTE (Chuckles @ Mar 2 2008, 02:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I taught my wife to drive. We started in a huge parking lot and went REAL SLOW. Don't try and push her, and don't let her out of the parking lots until she can really drive! That is my advice.

Go at night when no one is around in one of the larger employers in the area, or shopping mall. Security may harass you, but whatever, just go home and come back the next night when a more relaxed security guard is around.

It took about a month in the parking lots before we moved to the streets. Don't do any yelling, just be calm and relaxed as you can be. She was ready for the test in about 2 months. She aced the written but had to take the practical 4 times. Each time she did not pass it was 'the end of the world' for her, but anyway... on the fourth try she got nearly 100 percent. Each time she failed she had a female instructor, she had a male instructor the time she passed. Don't know what that means, draw your own conclusions...

Thanks for your advice smile.gif

Same here I did not pass the road test the 1st time with the female, but passed 2nd time with a male instructor. He was so nice smile.gif The female was a mean -----!

Thank you everyone for your advices.
I called the HCM Consulate today, and they let my fiancee to come and pick up the package.
Package 3 (Instruction package) contains:
DS 2001
DS 230 Part I
DSL 1083

DSL 1083 is just for instruction of obtaining Police Certificate, so we only turn in the DS 2001 and DS 230 Part I.
My fiancee could drop off the forms back to the Consulate at the same day.
I guess it's now just waiting for the package 4.
Does anyone know how long between package 3 turns in and receiving package 4?
According to the Consulate so it will take 2 to 4 months :-(

Thanks again for your help!

It was 4 weeks for me between Packet 3 and 4. They're taking off ~ one week for the Vietnamese New Year, so maybe you're looking at 5 weeks timeframe. Good luck!

There were too many letters I sent to her, but they only randomly chose to read two. The CO picked the long one (about 5-6 pages). They did not read the letters from my fiancee sent to me. Hope all of you in AP will get PINKs asap. And good luck to all upcoming interviews. Again thanks all and best wishes!:)

Peter, Do you know the valid dates on fiancee's visa by chance? Is it good for 3 or 6 months from date issued?

Hi all:

Is blue a good thing or bad? The blue slip looks generic and all intructions are translated to Vietnamese except for one paragraph re: timeline of relationship is not translated to Vietnamese, why? They ask for 1)timeline of relationship in detailed story and 2) proof of purchase of airline tickets--paid by cash or credit card? I compared mine and my friend who was interviewd by the same CO, we both got same instructions.

Anyone out there has any expirences re: blue slip, please help/share.

Gracias!

Hola all:

Just an update on my case--we've submitted all docs requested above. Then we got another blue slip asking for my parents' Birth Certs and her's parents' Birth Certs. We all have different last names, but have no ideas why this being asked. I will send them to her asap and will update you all. Anyway is this good or bad? Thanks all peeps out there for reading and responding to my posts.

Peace
