Me either. I'm seeing "zOMG! I'm so persecuted because my wife is from the Philippines!!!" but I'm not seeing any evidence of it at all. It's a simple property dispute. One person has to be right and the other wrong. Who he is married to has nothing to do with it. What he's going to do now, is GIVE some people a reason to hate Filipinas. Good job, moron.

PhilippinesFestivals in the Philippines
QUOTE (sunandmoon @ Sep 1 2009, 02:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
thought we could use this thread to share some info about the various festivals in the Philippines. here's some info about Kadayawan, held in my wife's hometown of Davao.

It is a celebration of Good Harvest! This globally famous festival is a weeklong celebration and thanksgiving for nature’s bountiful harvest. Kadayawan Festival is being celebrated every 3rd Week of August. A celebration of the plentiful harvests of fruits and orchids during the season. Kadayawan is derived from the prehistoric word “madayaw,” a warm and friendly greeting also used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable, “Kadayawan” in Mandaya means anything that brings fortune, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo usually gathered during the harvest-time when they had a bountiful harvest to give thanks to their gods particularly the all-powerful Bathala (supreme God). According to legend, the occasion is noticeable by happiness, singing, and dancing, as well as offerings to their divine protectors.

T he festival is celebrated in the month of August with floats of fresh flowers and fruits, and indak-indak sa kadalanan or street dancing in colorful costumes. A variety of tribes parade the streets with their tribal costumes and jewelry. The city of Davao comes alive every year in August when it holds it yearly harvest festival. The streets are adorned with local fruit & vegetables while people hold street dances with abandon for four days. The harbour is the venue for native & power boat races. Everybody fights for seats to watch the Horse Fighting wherein stallions fight each other over the rights to mate with a mare. The crowd is sometimes tracked by the horses if they get too close. The last day the street is full of costumed dancers dancing to the local beat & decorated floats with glamorous Mindanao girls as eye candy. It's a time of fun & abandon. The festivity is not complete without the Bya'Neng ng Kadayawan or the Miss Kadayawan beauty contest. There is also the horsefight, a tribal animal show similar to the bullfight in Spain.

History

The festival began from a government-initiated program called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” in 1986, planned to unite the Davaoeños after the chaotic martial law years and to showcase the city as a peaceful and colorful place to visit and do business in. At the time, it was called “Apo Duwaling,”a name created from the icons Davao was famous for: Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak; durian, the king of fruits; and waling-waling. The queen of orchids. Davao is also home of the majestic Philippine eagle, the national bird. In 1988, the festival was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to celebrate the city's unique wealth in flowers, fruits, and ethnic culture.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city.

“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain supreme. Be part of the experience.

“Du-aw na sa Dabaw! Duyog sa Kadayawan! Maglingaw-lingaw ta!”

PhilippinesHow tall/how short the "petite women"?

Yesterday, a friend of Bill came calling because he wanted to check his email in our computer. I was at the door when he arrived and he said, "Hi kiddo!" Since it was almost dinner time, we had pizza for dinner. Bill and Joe chatted for a while and when it was time for him to leave, he looked at me and said, "Bye Kiddo!" I told him, "OH no! Don't call me kiddo please!" He said, you're a kiddo. You have that child smile in your face. You're not a midget, are you?"

My question is, for short ladies like me, how short is short? I am 4 ft, 11 in tall. I know I am short. But we're not midgets, right?

I'm 4ft, 9 inch tall. And not to forget I'm barely 83lbs. A woman at walmart said teeny-tiny to me once too. smile.gif

Hey gals, my finacee will be living here with me in Texas when she arrives from Cebu. I was wondering how all of you Filipinas that live in Texas like it.
Does the weather seem ok, have you spent a brutal Texas summer here yet? We don't really get much snow, and the winters are generally mild, so you may not feel too cold here. Tank tops and flip flops are the norm here for 9 months out of the year.
We have beaches here, not as nice as PI, but beaches none the less. We have many lakes and rivers, and because the weather is so warm here there is alot of water-sports to get involved in, (wakeboard, wakeskate, ski, swim, boating, etc.).
There are lot's of good fishing spots, so we have a good variety of fresh seafood.
The Spanish influence can be seen and felt through town's names, the food, people's last names, etc.
There are lot's of Hispanics here, so the black hair/eyes, and brown skin doesn't stand out at all.
All in all i think Texas is a great cross-over from the PI.....am i right ladies?
Salamat Yall!

Will be 105F today in Austin. Right, I love the weather here not much of an adjustment except winter though. But winter is manageable. I was at Missouri last Dec. and it snowed. I was dying to come back here. Texas is best for me so far. smile.gif

You are in the Austin area? That's cool. I know it will make my fiancee happy to see these posts and know that she has some sisters near by. I live NW of Austin, about 30 minutes away. Maybe i will PM you sometime. I'm sure you have already found all the Filipino stores and what not around the area that my woman will inevitably be drawn to!
Thanks for the response!

Your welcome! We only went to one Filipino store where I bought milkfish(bangus) and our broom and send balikbayan boxes though. The rest we buy at wal mart as it is cheaper. I heard there's another bigger Filipino store up north but not been there. We love the townlake which is 5 mins from where we are. Sometimes drive at lake Austin and recently at lake Travis just for sightseeing. For me, Austin has a friendly atmoshphere too. I am sure your fiancee would like it here. smile.gif

PhilippinesDoes your wife think the US is too cold ?

My wife arrived from Cebu with me on December 16. It was about 50 degrees on the breezeway at Dulles when we arrived and deplaned and she was COLD! HAHAHA - I laughed with her!!. So I was also a bit worried about how she would adjust to the weather. But since then she has been totally tested and has passed with flying colors!! On December 18 (day 2) we received 20 inches of snow with wind where we live in Maryland. A record snow for the area and her first snow ever. We walked and enjoyed the snow and took lots of pics. On December 24 (day 8) while we were visiting family in Iowa we received a 16 inch snow with some ice and very cold. On January 1 (day 14) while visiting more family in Idaho we received a 16 inch snow that was very heavy and wet. Through all of this Gladys was excited to see the snow and experience the change in temperature. We have been walking and sledding and built a snowman, had a snow ball fight and played for hours - and she has enjoyed it all and has not really been cold at all. Now we are traveling in Wisconsin and have seen temperatures of -15 F (and lots more snow)!! She has not complained and has simply dressed warmer and learned to adjust to the conditions. In fact I think she is more adjusted to the climate this winter than I am!! (However, her feet are very cold at night when she gets into bed - WHOA!!)

Food has been just ok for her. It has been difficult to get her the foods she likes while we are traveling, but we are doing our best. She is also struggling to adjust to the cold dry air of winter in the North. We use a humidifier and saline nasal spray which helps.

So the moral is that if your wife is happy and excited to be here she will have no trouble adjusting to the colder weather.

Agreed. I am happy and excited when I got here. I adjusted great, even felt like I lived here and love the food. MIL says I'm already Americanized minus the winter though (PS: I even find myself humming Star-Spangled banner)... :)

But he spent his Christmas with another girl which I knew and teased him about it. We went out the second, third time and made it official on the fourth. PhilippinesDomestic Airport Terminal
Sadly, If I were you I wouldn't be comfortable with that. Transit from domestic airport to international takes minutes(depending on the traffic which I'm sure would be really bad). Once you're in(international), you have to queue for everything with the crowd(judging from the times I was there it's always full of people). You have less than an hour to do all of those.

I was once late, granted I still got 1:20 mins before departure(9:30am) and lucky enough that they opened an express lane for immigration(for late comers), I reached the gate with people already boarding the plane. I suggest you take your first trip way earlier or have it the night before. The airport may not be the nicest place to stay but you won't be worrying whether you'll be able to make it to your next flight or not. :)

Ok, then :). Just saying people are different. I do love riding a train and hopping from one city to another. Someday, I'll be able to do that with all the US cities, maybe Canada too(my husband isn't fan of it). The farthest I've gone to is Missouri, alone and 7 mos after I arrived here. I fell in love with it. So whenever I go to cities I take the train now or if ever I get invited somewhere and have all the time, flying is not an option. :)

PhilippinesBeware if you travel alone to the Philippines
We went home last Oct. When at airport and husband was Cebu pacific office, the guard started asking questions, them more and then proceeded to basically hinting for pasalubong or money. I told him I have nothing in our luggage since we sent our box 2 months before and ignored him after. Also, we were thinking of staying in Manila for a day, but decided to just wait at the airport. I'm not familiar with Manila and the thought of taxi rides didn't suit well on me(not saying all are scammers). I just didn't feel safe with it in an unfamiliar area so we took the airport bus between terminals(didn't care how long plus it's free and gave the driver a tip). When we arrived at my hometown (worse) taxi driver didn't use the meter and asked for a certain amount. I gave him less. So yeah, when someone suspicious looking starts asking me/us questions, I answer one or two and then look away. I also asked my husband to let me pay for some stuff while there and him always asking for receipts. Other than that, I love being home just as I love living in US. :)

honey_meFemalePhilippines2011-07-20 23:04:00
PhilippinesWhat did I do wrong?

My wife can't stop laughing!

The man is the boss. Dad runs the house with a leather belt, the bamboo slab, and the rice sack. Give him any guff, he slap you on the side of the head. That is why retreat and sulking is the only means of protest the wife, or daughter has. If she is throwing things now, she will pay for it later, when hubby sobers up.

Now, the wife is grinning like a Cheshire cat.

That reminds me of a neighbor who would spit outside his house, send his wife to the market and tell her to be back before it dries out. It's just as sick as my cousin (whose dad was "the boss"), beats her husband. That is also mostly true(partly why I never dated a Filipino). Although, I can never understand it as I am one of those who lives in the ideal world thinking, there is such a thing as equality and whose prerequisite in getting married is a guy who treats me what I deserved as a person and do the same, otherwise there will be no marriage. Thus, making it different from what I've seen.

Might also note, the italicized is no fun. It takes away the joy of childhood. :(
honey_meFemalePhilippines2011-07-20 15:44:00
PhilippinesWhat did I do wrong?

I said that I can see it being exploited and interpreted as emotional immaturity - meaning that, a husband could think that his wife is unable to handle tough situations in a level-headed way, therefore justifying "laying down the law" so to speak. :)

That's interesting what you say as lambing - my wife has explained lambing as being affectionate/loving. Could it mean different things depending on where you grew up?

I share the same definition of "Lambing", usually in my case is out of gratefulness. I'm from Mindanao and we're poor. We didn't grow up with "Tampo and Lambing". We were raised in "if you want something, work for it way", no easy way. Also, children shouldn't talk back to parents. While I'm guilty of silent treatment, it is because I'm so angry and don't know how to vent it, without hurting others(friends, relatives and parent).

I grew up from it. I just use silent treatment when saying "I am angry because..., please..." won't work with my husband(usually with habits, actually just one habit). With fellow Pinoys, I just usually cut my losses than use silent treatment. I'm glad I'm almost always heard and I try to always hear my husband out as well. Neither of us is the boss. Neither of us is the type that can be bossed around. Not him,not me. :)

To OP, I just wish you best. As a child of a parent who throw tantrums a lot,it is something I'd never want others to experience(whether it's coming from a man or a woman). Good luck.

Both and rarely. My family members(males)snore like motorboats so I'm used to it. I also don't mind noise unless it's early morning then that's annoying. When he does, I always feel like waking him up not because he's noisy but I'm scared listening to him like he stops breathing or something. He does sleep talk more though and it gets a bit funny.

Philippinescollectors

In the 18th century collecting became a popular activity that could display both your devotion to a particular subject and your wealth. Usually this was somewhat more lofty in scope than "collecting 3D puzzles" though clearly some people were merely imitating a fad and were not true collectors, but rather mere hoarders. Common things to collect were art, wonders of the natural world, or prints.

It's meant to be a pleasurable activity that keeps on giving when you enjoy your collection. Something beyond yourself is meant to be gleaned when one takes a step back and marvels at the fruits of his/her labors.

It has remained popular since.

No yelling for us(both hate it). I don't usually get mad at him and we tell each other everything. The next thing I know he's sticking his finger on my ear, trying to be funny  . Also, we don't reject each other when one tries to approach the other and after 4.6 yrs, I think I found the fountain of selective memory.
honey_meFemalePhilippines2011-06-11 04:56:00
PhilippinesWhy do Filipinos don't greet each other?

I find that ironic because I always felt the exact opposite. I've been to the Philippines 4 times and each time almost everyone has been very friendly and at least smiled if we made eye contact if not an actual hello. Most would go far beyond that and were very polite and kind. But I am a kano and a foreigner so maybe that has something to do with it. I always noted when I got back to the USA how differently the people in the airport workers acted here in America. Rude, or abrupt at best. But it does depend on where you live in the USA. Some cities are not friendly (including my own Philadelphia) and others are more friendly. For instance when I brought my fiancee back here on her K1 we flew into Minneapolis and I warned her that people in the USA at airports are rude and nasty. Well we had the complete opposite experience. Everyone including the customs officer were very very nice. If they were Filipino I would have thought I was back in the Philippines.

My experience is that the further you live from the city, the more friendly people seem to be. I grew up in rural New York State and the people there are 95% very friendly to everyone including complete strangers. Travel 6 or 7 hours east to New York City and you will find the complete opposite. City people seem to be more wary of strangers and its basic survival instincts to be cautious and be blind to everything around them. Maybe that is how the Pinay are when they come here.

Yes, it depends on the city whether it's friendly or not, ours is. I wasn't friendly in PI, rarely smile and only have few friends(still have) but I respond if someone is nice to me. I observe people whether they're humble, not nosy/gossipy or I have chemistry with them. I may have also expected the worst of US or none at all(I have been told by an old neighbor who has been here more than ten years, not to be too friendly). When I got here, most were welcoming and warm(in laws and relatives). I still remember the strangers who greeted us on our wedding day. For some reason I find people here more expressive(in words) which I like because I wasn't before. Also, we have been in other states/cities and I am fully aware there are a lot of rude people out there or even here. But then again, I surround myself with those who appreciate me and treated me well that it's magnified and if not I don't get bothered I can always walk away anyways.

So yes, I maybe one of those who changed when in US. It may not be all Pinay though. I'm happy here that I appreciate anything, good or bad and if only my family is here, it will be the best :). I smiled a lot when we went home last year so being married and US did good to me :).

PhilippinesWhy do Filipinos don't greet each other?
I consider myself not the friendliest when I was still in PI but would gladly respond if I'm greeted sincerely. When I got here, I notice people love to greet each other, I always get hi and how are yous that I smile, respond and do the same to others. I also love how people hold the door for me which I also do. Add the many times I hear "thank you", especially riding a bus or wherever and random "you're pretty/beautiful(from female/male strangers)" even if I didn't have anything on my face and wearing kids size shirt. I consider Americans one of the nicest and friendliest, I maybe lucky though most are nice to me or I'm too much of a happy person now that I don't know when someone is rude  . I also believe we live in a very friendly city, so yeah(won't be leaving this city ever :P ). What I usually do back in PI or when I get a feeling some is a Filipino here is to smile if they smile at me or nod which is my equivalent to saying hi. :)
