Wow. That is something. Thanks for sharing, Rhiann, I appreciate it. ANd uh, that sounds like NO fun at all in secondary -- gave me the heebie-jeebies reading that.

QUOTE (Rhiann @ Oct 14 2009, 04:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well.
I quit my job.
I was living at my parents' house.
I packed about 3 bags and I even took my dog!

I think the fact that I had no return ticket, had my dog and too many bags got me.
I didn't outright say I was going to visit my fiance or marry him, she just caught glimpse of my engagement ring and started pounding me with questions.
Got sent to Secondary and denied.
Filled out an "Application of Withdrawal" (or something) and got my ticket scribbled on with crayon so I couldn't use it. No ban for me though. Too scared to cross the border again anytime soon anyway laughing.gif

My fiance had been visiting and he was going back with me. It was so hard listening to him trying to find me when I was only like 10 feet away in another room. That was one hell of a depressing day.

Ended up going back to my old job and moved into town.
And here I am sitting here waiting for Montreal to dig its way out of their grave.

Canadahow DO people get by doing the A.O.S
Just curious as to the semantics of it all -- it seems really difficult to do. Marilyn or Rhian, would you mind just telling me how you did it? I'm just curious as to how you took care of your jobs/apartments/possessions and whatnot.

Don't worry guys, I"m not planning on jumping line, we're already married, but I just wanted to hear how it can be done -- I have 3 jobs here and a lot of stuff and a cat -- I can't imagine showing up 'for a visit' and then marrying and staying on a whim -- it would be logistically impossible.

Oh? And no judgment here on you guys -- you all rock so...
I'm just a curious girl...

Canadahow DO people get by doing the A.O.S
In the past few days, tons of people are writing about how to file for A.O.S after leaving Canada and marrying and living with their US spouse in the US.
I'm wondering... how the heck does that work? you have to prove that you didn't intend to marry and THUS didn't intend to live down there so... how do you do that? Wouldn't it look odd if you just happened to quit your job, leave you domicile, pack away/give away or bring your possessions down with you? maybe even bring your pet with you?

i'm just wondering how people manage to get the A.O.S approved with I think it would be really hard to prove that you weren't moving down to stay/get married?

Just wondering...

Buggles? I would LOVE it if I had someone to hitch a ride with over the boarder -- You have NO idea. That would be the best thing ever. Peachy and Varba go to my neck of the USA but I think are planning on heading down AFTER xmas whereas I would like to spend christmas with my family in the US.

I don't know if this is much of an option for you, but do you have any friends or relatives that may be willing to take you across to Buffalo? In my experiences crossing is the easiest this way. Whenever I would go over with my father they wouldn't bother to ask many questions... I remember once the border official asked me something like "you do plan on coming home right?" and my dad piped in and said, "she better or I'll go down there and kick her @ss!" laughing.gif That was the end of that! Maybe if you offered some money to pay for gas and their time it would be a little easier?

Hey all... just to let you know -- my husband is coming to see me for our first anniversay next month -- he's going to fly from BWI to Buffalo and then rent a car at the Buffalo airport and drive into the city to my house! All of this will be far less than half of what Air Canada wants to charge us for a ticket.

So, a HUGE thank you to all of you who helped and offered advice and such -- I will keep you posted as to how this works out for him the and for me at Xmas time. I bet there will be a lot of other people wanting to go this route.

Frankly? The fewer people who fly Air Canada the better -- they suck.

if it were a matter of a 100$ savings give or take I'd be like, meh, gimme the AC ticket but it's a matter of 100$s and 100$s of dollars, like 6-700$ each trip savings, then that is SOMETHING.. .

I wouldn't worry about it -- the airport code is NFIA and wouldn't be easily confused for something Buffalo related like BUF or BNIA which are basically the same airport. BUF is the actual airport code used for flight info and BNIA is some other 'majiggy...

There are however 2 airports in the area. BUF is the code for the airport in Buffalo. There is also a little airport in Niagara Fall, NY. I know it has a shuttle service to Myrtle Beach not sure how many other flights are run out of it.

Oh that's right..there are 2 airports int the area..my mistake there before in saying that there was only 1 airport in the Buffalo area blush.gif . Lol..that goes to show how much I fly (lol..I don't fly, I drive...). The Niagara Falls one I think they shut down for awhile for renovations, so maybe that's why it didn't occur to me about that either. They just re-opened it up again a few months ago, I think. Not sure if they only do domestic or if they do international and domestic too. Nevertheless, most people fly out of Buffalo instead, as there seem to be more flights there and better deals from there.
Hmm...maybe I should go flying someday (lol..will have to convince my husband to get his first US passport though...doubt he'll agree to it..lol...)

I was planning on wearing the jersey I got last time I was there.

Little secret for you all? My love of the Ravens is partly due to affiliation BUT I love the fact that an NFL football team is named after a great literary reference.

But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if its soul in that one word he did outpour
Nothing farther then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered--
Till I scarcely more than muttered: "Other friends have flown before--
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."
Then the bird said "Nevermore."

24 hours before your flight, copy your confirmation # and then check in online. Your boarding pass will be displayed, and it will have an A, B, or C #. (The holy grail is to obtain the lowest possible A #. lol) When you get to the departure gate there will be stainless steal cylinders with the numbers engraved on them in groups of 5. You line up according to your group. The A group boards first. If you received # A34, you would be the first to line up and stand next to the corresponding number on the cylinder. Once onboard the plane you pick a seat and sit down. If you suck and you received C64 you board last and end up in the middle seat between the two people no one else wanted to sit beside. lol.

They used to load the infirm and the small children before everyone else. I liked that because I could find a seat nowhere near them. smile.gif Now they do the infirm first, then the A seating, and then the small children. Unless the small children have A #'s better than yours then they will board after you. Oh well. Tis a short flight.

And to think, all these years on vj, I never knew about such...lol....will have to check that off-topic fun thread out sometime...

I'm usually on the Canada boards or the immigration-specific boards (for example, right now I'm on the N-400 boards), so have no clue about the off topics (except for the Baby Corner board, that I dropped into a couple of times). Guess I must have missed the Commies along the way....

I agree, this is the main site that I've spent so much time on over the years. And yes, in the years, I have met so many new people (both online and in-person) and have learned so many things along the way too. Oh yeah, if we're all in this immigration journey, then let's go through it all together! Not too many people understand about all this immigration stuff...and to find others that are going through the same/similar thing, it helps and is very supportive too!

Sigh...It's going to be sad when my immigration journey will end soon..... crying.gif But then again...maybe I can stick around...VJ is too addicting to quit!

Hi Lgg,

Interesting to learn that there is a direct bus from Toronto to the Buffalo airport. Never knew about that before....Learning something new each day..wink.gif
But yeah, it's better to get the direct bus there, than to stopover in Buffalo (unless you want to though).
Smart in you doing your extra research there... good.gif
And $60...not bad...sounds like a good deal there for the bus tickets.
And 3 hrs sounds about right for the bus travel times...(though again, allow room for delays).

Lol..There's only one airport in Buffalo. Too small of a city for another airport! (heck, I'm surprised that Buffalo even has an airport at all)
The next nearest airport is the Rochester, NY Airport. Not sure if they have flights to BWI or not...But you're better off going to Buffalo, NY instead.
But yeah, the easiest and quickest is to get from Toronto to Buffalo, as the buses frequently travel between those two cities.
Good deal that you got there too, with the $150 flight to BWI too.

Happy Holiday Travels!

Hey, just to let you all know, I was getting BUMMED as all the flights I was finding from Buffalo to Washington had stopovers in Newark or Philadelphia... FFS! BUT, I found lovely Southwest airlines that has a DIRECT flight from buffalo to the BWI airport AND the price, even at Xmas time, was 150$ all in return.

Also, the Couch buslines goes right to the Buffalo airport -- I'mgoing to assume for now that this is the correct airport?? So that ticket is about 60$ all in and the ride takes about 3 hours.

I think that this settles it for me. I realize there might be delays and such -- I may even miss a flight but you know what? I'll get to my family in Maryland at some point so...

Thanks for your help and your well wishes. I appreciate it a lot. If anyone happens to know if I'm incorrect about the bus going into the Buffalo airport, drop me a note but as far as my research dictates now, the apparently do.

And that would be great.

Hi Lgg,

I personally haven't taken the bus from Toronto to Buffalo (My husband and I prefer to drive instead, we're country folks).

However, some Canadian relatives of mine (they don't drive, like you, they're city folks) that came over from Canada recently for a visit rode the bus here (I'm near Buffalo, NY), and this is what they did:
-Bought the bus tickets from Coach Canada: http://www.coachcana...om/coachcanada/
-The schedules from Toronto to Buffalo are as follows: http://www.coachcana...id=225670112158 (this also includes both coach canada and mega bus schedules)
-Tickets are about $30 one way, and $50 round trip on coach canada
-Yes, the mega bus does exist and tickets are only $1. However, reservations have to be made in advance online for that, those buses don't have frequent schedules, and they only run at certain times of the year. So plan ahead if you want to ride the mega bus. Otherwise, just go with the regular coach canada buses, which are pretty frequent schedules and are reliable.
-The buses leave in Toronto from the Greyhound Station (near Dundas and Yonge St., I think) or at the Royal York Hotel, and have various stops in Ontario (Niagara Falls, St. Catherines, Grimsby, etc.) along the way.
-The trip takes 2-3 hours from Toronto to Buffalo. Allow room for some delays though, especially since going through customs/border crossings can cause delays for everyone on the bus.
-The buses stop at the Ft.Erie/Buffalo customs/border crossing for inspection (lol...aka interrrogation from the border guards)
-The bus stops at the downtown Buffalo Bus terminal.
-From the Buffalo Bus terminal, you can take a local bus (kind of like the TTC/The Rocket) from NFTA (Niagara Frontier Transit Authority) bus to the Buffalo Airport (I don't know the exact schedules, but I assume they have at least one bus a day from there).
-For more info about NFTA buses to the Buffalo Airport, you can check it out here: http://www.nfta.com/metro/routes/ and here: http://www.nfta.com/metro/airport.asp "Airport-Downtown Express
This shuttle runs non-stop service between the airport and Buffalo's central business district, including the Metro Bus station downtown (Metropolitan Transportation Center.) One-way fare (in most cases) is $2.05. Service runs weekdays, approximately every 30 minutes, during peak drive time. Consult the schedule - Route 204"

Hope this helps. Good luck on your holiday travels to the USA and on your immigration journeys too.

Well, it looks as though I won't be home for Xmas yet again so... I'm going to fly to see my husband over xmas. As you all must know, Air Canada blows big lumpy chunks when it comes to price and selection.
What I was thinking of doing was taking the bus from Toronto to Buffalo NY -- Just found out it only takes about 2 hours using a company called Mega Bus and then I will fly out of BUF to BWI for about 200$ or less.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can go about this? I do not drive and thus, do not own a car -- I wish I did now but alas...
How do you all do it?
Anyone want to carpool? I am excellent company!
wink.gif
just looking for other travel ideas that are cheaper and such. Also, if you have heard anything about the bus company I mentioned or have any other ideas as to how to get to Buffalo airport in safe manner? OR know of some cheap airlines and stuff that I may not have found.
Thanks guys...

I bet you a 5 spot that the name DOES come from the Poem. Edgar Allen Poe lived in Baltimore....
Thus... the Ravens...
5 spot. Bet. Do it!

Steelers, eh? We were in a restaurant in W.Virginia one time and some guy had the Steelers Logo TATTOOED on his arm. Was that you?
Were you eating all the grits?

I don't forgive you.

I am not sure I believe the team name came from the poem.

Even if it did, the Ravens are still bitter rivals of my Steelers, so.. ya know... can't really like 'em. smile.gif

HA!!!!!!!

YOu just made me laugh out LOUD!!!

You know we should do? We should start VJ Canada to USA Carpooling groups. Like there has to be a significant number of people here who drive and maybe, if they want to or feel like it, they could post a thread saying, driving here in this date, coming back this date from here to there kind of thing?

I dunno? Is that dumb? I can't tell you the number of times I wish I knew someone who lived in my general area and was going to the same state I was and could drop me off somewhere. Pay for gas, ###### about NVC and such...

I dunno....

Just sayin'...

Oh my gosh.... there are no worries to be had. Lots of people who don't/haven't lived in the city are surprised at this. Talk to me about the people in my office who live in Ajax or Oshawa! They're beside themselves with the fact that I don't own a car. They FREAK right out when I tell them that I ride a bicycle a lot of the time too.

I know how to drive -- I did not say I was any good at it. I need a lot of practice!

Knowing where you live, I wasn't surprised that you don't own a car. Also, I realize there are many American cities where people do not own cars. Just because I live in flyover country doesn't mean I'm a complete rube. laughing.gif What I was questioning was that you don't know how to drive, but I see in your last post that you do indeed know how to drive. If you had never learned to drive, then I would have been shocked. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
