CanadaMy interview plan of attack ;)
Sapphire is totally right about the last flight of hte day thing -- even with the slightest of delays/weather, that last flight'll always get the boot.
Good luck.

QUOTE (SapphireDreams @ Nov 4 2009, 11:21 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I think you would be okay if you flew into Vancouver the night before, got a hotel room, went to the medical in the morning and then flew back the same day.

Same with the interview. Fly in the night before, attend the interview and fly home.

I don't think $80/night for a hotel is that much money to pay for piece of mind. Sucks to have to miss a day of work and pay for the hotel, but you need to think about the consequences. If you miss the interview it could be months before you get another one... and you'll have still invested the time and money to TRY to get there in the first place.

Also, piece of advice, never take the last flight of the day, it's always delayed and if it's cancelled you're pretty much screwed and must wait until the next morning for the next flight.

Wow, paul... that is REALLY cutting it close -- I would definitely make accommodations for delays and stuff as you just can't rely on that many modes of transport working in synch...

Well I finally got my interview date yesterday for Dec 2nd. So in a crazy frenzy of flight searches etc heres a quick breakdown of my plan of attack.
Vaccines taken care of so next Monday book a medical in vancouver ($350) for same day results. Fly from Calgary to Vancouver Monday morning and return Monday night ($248 for flights).
Booked flight for Calgary to Montreal leaving calgary 4pm Dec1st arriving 12.58 am Dec 2nd and returning 8pm December 2nd ($466).
Rental car from airport in montreal ($46 for the day)
This way I minimise my time off work since I am paid by the day and I have no hotel costs, I'll just sleep in the airport, or car, or on the steps of the consulate. unsure.gif

If they only knew the costs and madness associated with this stupid protocol of only using certain physicians for medicals and not having interviews in Calgary. Oh well- just happy the ball is finally rolling. Good luck to all the others waiting for interviews.

Hey Good Luck!!!..wow thats some trip!!!..i live in saskatoon and thank god i going to Vancouver for the interview and i can do the medical at the same time..i argee i might end sleeping in the airport..i dont think they really care what the costs are..and in the end its worth every penny!!!

I will be starting off in Purcell, ok... not far from OK city and the world famous will roger airport huh!! then to Texas..

Good Luck stay in touch if you what too...

Tony and Carol

Thats funny I'm actually working in Weyburn sk right now, just down the road! Just got off the phone with my best friend in Saskatoon (lives on Mkercher Drive). Small world!
Anyways plans are changed, new plan for medical. Looked more closely at the Woking medical website and see that they ONLY do medicals on Wednesday and ONLY at 6.30am headbonk.gif
Good thing I didnt book plane tickets. Anyhow Greyhound leaves Calgary at 1.15pm and gets to Vancouver at 5.15am which gives me 1 hour 15 to walk the 2.2kms between greyhound and medical office. Sleep on greyhound - no need for hotel greyhound cost 88 bucks. Return to calgary on seat sale flight same day for 69 bucks plus tax........
Wish me luck

Wow...that's cutting things really close. I don't think I'd be trusting Greyhound to get through the snowy Rockies etc. exactly on time. Plus, you're NOT going to want to walk from the Greyhound terminal in Vancouver to the medical office. It is in one of the worst areas of the city. And I don't think you could make it from the terminal to the medical center in an hour, 2km or no. Better to walk a couple blocks to the Skytrain station, then take it to the Burrard station.

I dunno man...it's your call, but for something as important as this I'd want to give myself a lot more "contingency" time, just in case one of the variables goes awry.

For the record, I'm in the Vancouver area, so I'll have to fly to Montreal for the interview too. Fortunately I can have my medical in town though. It really defies logic that there's not at least two participating consulates in a country as big as Canada...

So my wife and kid and have been gone back to canada for three weeks now, no big deal by immigration standards. Thing is, I'm going insane. I've never been away from my kid for more than two days before. I went to buy a webcam today and realized that my mac is so outdated I can't even buy a webcam for it. Anyways, I was thinking about my single life before I got married, it was only five years ago. I had no problem spending time alone, if wanted to go out I would, If I wanted to stay home and watch TV I would, and it wouldn't bother me. Now, my apartment seems like this Tomb, just empty. I guess what I'm trying to say is that once you have a family, there is no going back, nothing tops it. So here's to happy reunions that just seem far away right now. Hoo-rah.

Unfortunately, 2 winters ago I was on the bus and a man across the road ran out to try and catch said bus -- he was hit full on by oncoming traffic and he died.

We all saw the whole thing from the bus. It shocked me and I walked home the rest of the way -- about an hour in the cold. I was really, really upset to have seen someone get killed like that.

Awww.... I love that kitteh!

I have a very, very sad kitty story for you all. My downstairs neighbors had this gorgeous cat -- black and white sweety with a great personality and friendly and squishy as anything....
They slid a note under my door this morning to tell me that he'd been hit by a car and had died.

OMG... I cried in my stairwell -- he was such a nice guy and the thing that touched me was that they'd thanked me for being so nice to him. .
My gosh... most kitties are nicer than most people -- he was my buddy.

anyway. It gave me a sad start to the day -- I cried in the carpool car -- good thing they are my friends.

My kitty is safe at home, busting into my bedroom to sleep on the pillows of my bed. For this reason I love her.

Hey, I can totally relate to the original poster regarding Blair Witch Project. I was in my late teens when it came out, and I saw it a day or two after it first opened, when there was still lots of rumor that it was real footage. I distinctly remember having to fall asleep facing the wall that night as I was worried I would look into the corner of the room and see someone standing there, facing it.

I'm quite impressed that people remember It!. I bought it a few months ago, as that was another movie from my teens that scared the ####### out of me. Not the ending, which was lame, but the first half of the movie with Pennywise the clown.

Another one I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is The Shining. All those brief flash cuts of slaughtered twin girls and elevators full of blood...

I hear Lars Von Trier's recent movie Antichrist is pretty scary. Given that his other films aren't even remotely "horror" films yet manage to be deeply disturbing, I wouldn't be surprised if Antichrist (which was nominated for the Golden Palm award at Cannes, no less!) outdoes them all. It's out on DVD a few days after Halloween.

But, I often tell people that sometimes being away from the loved one is easier than being here in the US with them. I actually found that I dealt with things better when we were apart then when I got here.

Most people underestimate the emotional pain of leaving their country....until they are actually here...and it feels like their world has turned upside down a bit.

HEy all... little late to the game but I wanted to say that that too was my clarification of legal and illegal. My visit for 4 months, I had NO idea what was going on and stuff like that -- if we'd married and done it, it would have been okay as it was NOT planned. Any time after that? I knew what the shizzle was and would have been doing stuff that I knew was wrong.

I'm not callin' anyone 'illegal' nor do care too much what other people do -- I don't judge. I just don't like large amounts of ignorant mixed in with larges amounts of smug.

I hear you, we considered doing that too - but not understanding the full implications at the time.

We were not even 100% sure that we wanted to move to the U.S. - so why go through all the immigration time and expense?

During one visit to the consulate here in Calgary (I had a question about the I-130 - this was pre-finding vj) I asked the person there - sooo what if we just pack a few things, go to the border and go live in the U.S. for a while to see if we even want to move?

She was very nice and said no, you don't want to do that - they will send you back.

Could we have done that though, in reality - absolutely we could have. Would I have done it if I knew I had to lie at the border? No way.

I think for a lot of people it would not be easy, for the reasons you outlined. I also think for a lot of people it would be very easy. If you are working at timmies, living with your parents and not paying off big bills, you get in your car, go for a visit, get married and AOS - easy.

It would also be pretty easy to justify. How about, ok, i'm going to visit my SO and see how I like it there. You appear at the border - I am going to visit my SO, they let you through - oh you like it there, let's get married and AOS.

For those that intend to stay in the U.S. and AOS, with intent to do that when they cross the border - well, see the above - is that really intent? Also, if they are not really questioned they never have to actually lie and it seems, from what I have read here - that people, during the AOS interview, are generally not questioned about their intent when they entered the U.S.

Plus, we need to remember that this is purely the honesty system here - lots of people are not honest.

Canadahow DO people get by doing the A.O.S
Wow. That is something. Thanks for sharing, Rhiann, I appreciate it. ANd uh, that sounds like NO fun at all in secondary -- gave me the heebie-jeebies reading that.

Well.
I quit my job.
I was living at my parents' house.
I packed about 3 bags and I even took my dog!

I think the fact that I had no return ticket, had my dog and too many bags got me.
I didn't outright say I was going to visit my fiance or marry him, she just caught glimpse of my engagement ring and started pounding me with questions.
Got sent to Secondary and denied.
Filled out an "Application of Withdrawal" (or something) and got my ticket scribbled on with crayon so I couldn't use it. No ban for me though. Too scared to cross the border again anytime soon anyway laughing.gif

My fiance had been visiting and he was going back with me. It was so hard listening to him trying to find me when I was only like 10 feet away in another room. That was one hell of a depressing day.

Ended up going back to my old job and moved into town.
And here I am sitting here waiting for Montreal to dig its way out of their grave.
