3 years from issuance of conditional status IF married. 5 years if not. They do take into consideration the amount of time spent outside the US in that calculation as well. So, if out of US for a large legnth of time, you will need to adjust that time.

Same rule applies...you can apply 90 days before the date of the conditional status approval.

What about some sort of computer review and pre-testing. There must be something out there.

I've seen classes at local churches too. Maybe something group like that.

Lastly, I would just quiz him daily as we were driving in the car or eating dinner or something. Make it so everyday that it's just habit.

Or, like here, you can send citizen down to courthouse of city of birth, if convenient. It takes me all of 15 minutes and I think it's $10 to get a certified copy of my birth certificate in St. Louis city hall.

I definately think you need to get a certified copy to take.

assuming you are still currently married to the same USC... If a divorce should occur then the 3/3/3 rule is out and it is 5 years from LPR.

That is so totally judgemental and uncalled for. There are several people who live together and spend almost waking moment with each other and are both miserable. Just my two cents.

It raises a question: if it's a marriage based timeline that we're filing under, does the spouse have to attend? Is it mandatory? Just wondering, because it's difficult for my husband to take time away from work. I was going to attend by myself, unless he needs to be there?

It's a very good point.  I was told that they WILL scrutinize you more if your spouse is not there, especially at the oath.  Our officer said that if your spouse is not present for the oath they will pull you out of line and you have to wait until everyone else is finished and then they further interview you to make sure that all is good.  I think if your husband takes the invite letter to his boss he can work something out.  I mean, what kind of boss doesn't want his employee's wife to not become an American? :)  Best of luck!

Hi all, my wife (and I) had her interview on Thursday morning. I will give a brief review and hope it is informative, but I imagine that there will be wide differences in experience. We arrived about 15 minutes early at the field office and were instructed to place her interview letter in a mail slot. Right at 8:15am she was called back and I was told to also come along. Our cell phones were locked away and we were led to an office. We both were asked to swear the truth and to be seated. The officer said that she likes to get the test out of way first so she quickly administered the written and spoken test followed by the civics test (stopping after the sixth question). She then went through the application and reasked all of the questions. She did an ID check, comparing the photos from the passport, greencard, and drivers license. She asked both of us what we do for a living, about our son, about my previous marriage, and then some generic conversation. She stated that since the naturalization was based on marriage and since I was present and all of our paperwork was in order that she was recommending my wife for approval. She did ask for pictures of our family together...which we did not take. She said it was not required, she just likes to see those things in a file. She said a letter would be mailed to us letting us know when the oath ceremony would be held and stressed that I should be there because they will essentially reinterview everyone at the oath. I was surprised by this, and she said that you would not believe the number of people who commit a crime, file for divorce, ect in the month between approval and oath. If you are lucky to have an office that provides same day oath this will not be an issue for you. All in all, the whole process took 15 minutes and not the 2 hours that the letter said it would take, so we went and had a nice breakfast before heading off to our respective jobs. I hadn't received a notification for being placed in line for the interview, so i decided to check my status on USCIS and apparently, i was placed in line for interview scheduling on August 7th. Just curious- anyone know why i didn't receive a notification? Outside of the e-notification, do they mail out a letter saying you have been placed in line? 
 
Also, how will they communicate the interview date? will that be an e-notification too? or will they mail a letter? 
 
here's the official wording. 
Testing and Interview
On August 7, 2014, your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was placed in line for interview scheduling. When scheduling is complete, you will receive a notice with a time and place for your interview. If you have not received the notice within 90 days of the date above, please call customer service at 1-800-375-5283 for further assistance. Please check our website at www.uscis.gov for further updates on your case. If you move, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address.






We did not receive a letter indicating placed in-line, but did receive the text message. You will receive a letter indicating your interview date. We received the yellow letter yesterday and at first thought it was an RFE, but it is normal.

This is more an advice for others who are not quite as far.

If you are an immigrant, tax returns are a part of every step of the immigration process, all the way up to naturalization. You need to have a folder labeled "USCIS" from early on, and you need to feed it with everything that may be needed or helpful on your journey.

Hi

I have been a US resident for 5+ years. Now, I am filling my N-400 application to get my US citizenship. I have few questions about the application:
1- In the last 5 years, the first 2 years I wasn't working and I was taking care of my mom after the death of my father at the end of 2005. In year 3,4 and 5 I only worked part time and I didn't make enough money to file for taxes(according to my accountant). I just wanted to know if that will affect the acceptance of my N-400 application?

2- On the N-400 application, and on part 3: question F it asks: ARE EITHER OF YOUR PARENTS US CITIZENS? my mother is only a green card holder and my father was a US citizen but he passed away, should I answer the question with yes or no?

I haven't looked too much into the N-400 material yet but here's my two cents.

1. I presume you still filed your tax returns as normal every year? So long as you have no issues with the IRS (i.e. your tax returns are all in order) and you can prove this (you will be requiring to show tax return transcripts from the IRS for the past 5 years) I don't think it matters how much you worked or how many taxes you ended up paying (though if anyone else has info on this matter please feel free to add the info). However, I would double-check first with the IRS to make sure all your taxes are in order and that e.g. you were truly justified not to file with them. Go to your local IRS office and discuss this matter with them. If you end up having to make back payments they will need to give you some proof of this repayment process for you to send with your N-400 application.

2. It's a bit of a bummer, isn't it. I think you should answer Yes. Personally I would attach a sheet that points out he is deceased, in case this information is not easily deduced from the application form.

I don't agree with that. Whenever I fill out any kind of credit forms they allow you to claim child support as income, if you wish. At times I have. At other times, I haven't needed to.

I've always felt it's an if you want to kind of thing.

This is correct. The delivery fee is around $45.

He will need a police record which is around $100 and he needs to get it in Kingston.
He will need a non-impediment of marriage form which is around $100 and he needs to get from a local RDG office.

If you fiance needs any shots at all, I suggest he has those done at the local clinic before the medical exam to save some money. The actual medical exam is around $100 too.


He has done the medical and gotten his police record, but what is a non-impediment of marriage? This is something needed at the interview, right?


The form states he isn't married now and is free to marry you. Yes, he needs it at interview. It can take up to 2 weeks to receive, so do it early.

What exactly do you mean about "turning in his application in Kingston"? The DS-230, Part I? is that what you mean? If so, make sure he called/e-mailed and got an appointment to do this. They will not let him in the embassy otherwise.

If you are talking the I-129F, it needs to be mailed to the US.

Once all the paperwork is in and to Kingston, the appointment will be a month or two after.
