Okay, I just got some at World Market. They only had two tins left and they were dented and they were $1.79 each but I still bought them. And I am eating some RIGHT NOW on toast and they are delicious. I also bought a Turkish Delight which I ate immediately in the car despite my "only eat chocolate at home" rule. You can only get that at specialty shops in Canada too, so it was an extra treat.

I kind of agree with what someone said earlier about Target being kind of just a bit glossier than Walmart with fancy marketing, and cleaner, but not *really* that different (maybe a bit trendier stuff) but I don't care, I still love, love, love it:). I can spend hours in there and I often do, since I'm not yet working. Sad, right??

My fiance went on about the Heinz beans and refused to try our commonly available Van Camp's Pork and Beans. I've eaten the beans in the UK and they taste the same to me. The 'pork' part, I think, was what was putting him off. They're pretty plain with no extra brown sugar, etc. There's about two tiny cubes of what I guess is the 'pork' in the whole can and that's easily fished out if it's so offensive.

Well to prove a point, I bought a can of Heinz beans at the British Market in a large city while we were there. Then back home I did a blind taste test with him. I heated the Brit beans and the common (in Texas) pork and beans and served them in identical bowls. I told him to pick out the 'real' beans from the British store. He actually picked the the Pork and Beans as the proper British beans. So those particular beans couldn't be too far off the mark.

Oh that's funny. I guess maybe it IS psychological. I don't care, I still want Heinz beans!!!!!! :stamps foot in a sulk:

It's like a sort of superstore that has everything, and is cheap with a sort of upmarket gloss and slick advertising that makes everything seem nicer than it really is. They have their own lines of lots of products, and they get "famous" designers to do inexpensive limited edition clothing lines for them. Some of them have grocery sections too. I guess maybe the closest UK equal I have seen is ASDA?? But not sure.

ThailandThai Visa Pckt 3 Instructions

I'm looking at the instructions for visa packet 3 that you get from NVC. On the last signature page it lists 4 enclosures, one of which is "Special instructions for Thai applicants." Not quite sure which requirement they are referring to. Can someone help to clarify this?

Kab Khun Kab.

You will not receive the package 3 from the NVC, As a CR-1 applicant, you will receive the package 3 from the Bangkok embassy via mail or email once the embassy receives the approved pettition from the NVC. You can access the package 3 at the embassy website. Everything in that package is specific for thai applicants. Here is the link http://bangkok.usemb...as/packets.html. Hope this helps

ThailandMedical Form DS2053 or DS2054

We just made our appointment for the medical. There are two forms for this, the 2053 and the 2054. From what I can find online, embassies in certain countries use the 2054 and some the 2053. I've seen some threads where people were sent back to the doctor to transcribe the info from one form to the other. Does anyone have the list of which countries use which forms?

Does anybody know about Thailand? The hospital told us to bring the 2053, but the embassy has the 2054 on its website. :help:

We used the 2053 and the visa was jsut approved by the bangkok embassy in April. Unless, they just changed it between April and now, I would go with the 2053. Good luck!

ThailandK=1 and tourist visas

Hi everyone-At 30 day mark from my NOA1 and after some discussion with friends in Thailand everyone seems to think it would be easy to have my fiance apply for a tourist visa and visit me in the USA while we wait on the K-1. Any feedback on:

1. What is the likelihood it would be approved.
2. What do they look for when approving a tourist visa?
2. Does it in any way jeopardize the K-1 Approval?

Thanks in advance!

You can try, but it is not going to be easy from what I have read here in the past. For the turist visa, they want to make sure that your fiance has enough ties to Thailand to ensure that she will return to her country on time and not over stay. Applying for a tourist visa will not jepardize your K-1 application, however, your K-1 application could easily jepardize your tourist visa.

No you will be fine we all have gone though this different name on passport and GC all you need to do is carry your marriage certificate as CO's realise you would not have had time to change name on passport. You'll be ok have a great trip. Just make sure you book the air ticket in name on passport as they have to match.

Thanks for the ticket name advice. i didn't even think about that. :D

So, we are planning to travel to Thailand in February. I just realized that my wives passport still has her maiden name and her newly arrived green card has her new married name. Is this going to be a problem when we go thought passoport checks once we are making our way back home to San Diego?

We don't want to get a new passport unless we really have to., but is we have to, we will take a stroll to LA to the Royal Thai embassy to get it done. Does anyone know?

Damn, prices from Bkk to the U.S. (ORD specifically) are expensive now. A lot more expensive then a couple years ago. I'm seeing lowest prices in the 1500s. Anyone seen anything cheaper? I'm picking weekday dates, but I'm guessing the time between the flights is a factor (5+months).

Go to yapta.com. They have the best prices. We found round trip tickets for $1120. The cheapest I found.

How do I notify the embassy that Ice's address is changing?

It seems like he is only moving to Bangkok to accomodate the visa process. I would not consider this a permanent move. If that is the case, I would not change the address at this stage in the visa process. If you alreadyreceived and sent the packet 3 back, I wouldn't worry about it. You would be notified via email with the interview invitation letter. If they issue his visa, he will be able to pick it up in person a few days after it has been approved. He shouldn't be getting any additional mail correspondence. But if you insist in on changing your address with the embassy. Contact them via email the same way I showed you before.

My wife failed twice on the English test in Texas. She passed on the third try for the written test. Her friend who has lived here for 8 years continues to fail the test. After 3 failures you have to wait 90 days. Pretty frustrating for her.

She's getting pretty good driving on the freeway etc. since she only drove a motor bike in Thailand.

Here in CA, you don't have to wait to retake afte the third failure. You can continue to retake. The only thing is that when you fail for the third time, you have to reapply and pay the fee again. Glad to hear your wife is doing well. I am going to start teaching Nan this weekend. She is pretty excited.

For those of you living in California. Whenever your spouse is ready to take the driver's written test, be aware that it is available in Thai. Initially, 2 different DMV employees told us that it was not available in Thai. However, today, and after Nan failed her test twice, they showed us a Thai test. Pretty frustrating, but I hope someone can benefit from our experience. Again, insist on a Thai test. It is available in California DMV's.

I'm looking for some apartments in the 4,000 baht per month range, either in Chiang Mai or the outskirts of BKK.

While I am waiting for a responce from some people who have apartments, I looked up Airport Residence Chiang Mai Apartments. I saw a mix of good and bad reviews. Does anyone know about the noise in that area? I just don't want it to be like last time when I went to Chiang Mai and our apartment was right next to a night club and we couldn't go to sleep until 2AM.

I figured I should check out the outskirts of BKK too because he has to go there for the interview eventually anyway. But I don't know if there are any places that are nice and only 4,000 baht per month. :/

In Bangkok, we rented a room w/bathroom and balcony for 3,500 baht. Plus internet was (optinal) 300 baht. Electric (our use with A/C) 900 baht. water (our use) 100 baht. The apartments are in Lad Prao. If you are interested. I can give you the address.

Also, when Nan was in Thailand, I used Vonage to call here. If you get the world plan (which is 24.99 a month) you can make unlimited calls to Thailand land lines and cell phones. $25 a month can't beat that. Although is you don't call on the phone a lot, I recommend Pennytalk (we also used it) Penny talk charges by the minute with no monthly fees. I believe it is 0.05 cents per minutel. I have a question about the vaccinations for a k-1 visa. Should I have Pui get them in Thailand or wait to have them here? She does not have any of her records from when she was a kid. If it is done in Thailand I know it is cheaper to go to a local dr and getting a record of the vaccinations then going to BNH. I emailed them and they said anywhere between 5000 and 7000 baht depending on what the dr thought. Does anybody know how much it would cost to have it done here? I guess I am trying to find out which is cheaper here or Thailand. I have a feeling Thailand is cheaper. I also have a feeling she would have had most of the shots already but not all.

My fiance also didn't have any shots in her records, she took them and tghe cost was 6800.

ThailandHelp with packet 3 forms

There is nothing wrong with doing it this way but there is really no need to spend 800 dollars to do what most of us did by ourselves. In this example we see the use of the " official" approval from some Thai ministry. This simply isn't a factor nor a requirement.

It all depends on the couple, their situation and admin skills. I am furtunate enough to be able to pay the fee. Please don't get hang up on the translations; after I spent 45 minutes on the phone trying to explain my wife how to print a form from a computer at a ciber cafe, I realized that the $800 was going to be well worth it, and it was. I applaude everyone's wives for being able to pull it off without help, but not everyone is able to do that for one reason or another. This service was right for us and I would recomend it to anyone in the same situation we were.

Ya, I've decided to do the forms here and mail them over for her signature. There is of course a risk of loss, but hopefully it goes well.

Good luck to you guys!

ThailandHelp with packet 3 forms

My then fiance and I also had the same concerned you do. We decided to hire a service office to help her fill out the forms and to gather the proper/required documents. I ended up doing the petition myself and they complete her visa application in Thailand for her. Please note that they charge about 800 dollars for that service and that you have to pay in advance, but the service includes the translations and the official approval from the Thai ministry of foreign affairs. You may call them to see if you want to use them. I used them and I was very happy with the results. They are siam legal, they have offices in Bangkok, Pukhet and Chiang Mai. They have several paralegals working cases. Our paralegal was great. His name is Martin Juarez. They have a US number for ytour convenience that automatically transfer to theit office in Bangkok. (323) 515-4462 and (323) 482-1525.

Good luck

The only place i have seen it mentioned, is for the police report.

If we do need it, could somebody send me the name of the document in Thai so I can pass it along to my girlfriend and there is no confusing about what she needs to get.

How long do you guess it will take to get the number and move along to BKK?

ThailandAchtung! Chula students celebrate graduation with Hitler

Hot on the heels of Bangkok's Hitler Fried Chicken comes Hitler Chulalongkorn University.
Students at the Thai school have erected a massive graduation mural in the middle of their campus that inexplicably features an image of the German dictator heiling.
The banner was first hung up two days ago, according to our tipster who would only identify himself as, "a concerned and incredulous American student studying the language and culture of Thailand."
Coconuts readers might ask - why would students at Thailand's most prestigious academic institution create such a mural? Good question.
The answer is probably embedded on the mural itself. Accompanying the Führer are superheroes like the Hulk, Superman, Captain America, Batman and Ironman. Our hunch is a hapless scholar Googled the term 'superman' and somehow confused it with Nietzsche's concept of Übermensch of which Hitler was a well-known fan.
Or perhaps we're giving the kids too much credit. There's only so much that can be blamed on lost in translation and this kind of stupid requires a level of ignorance that is difficult to fathom.
Either way it's a sure sign that Chula needs to have their students read some F*cking history books.

My wife has been here for about 3 years so she's not as easy to please as when she first got here but I made her very happy recently by buying her a outdoor propane cooker with a 22-inch wok: http://www.amazon.co...sxp_grid_pt_0_2

Best pad thai ever comes out of that thing.

Most of the other suggestions on this thread are great, btw.  One thing you can do to help her improve her english is to watch a lot of american shows and movies on Netflix.  With most shows and movies on Netflix, you can turn on english subtitles which has been a great help to her as far as understanding spoken english, especially the southern accents that she often hears here in NC.  Be careful about what you let her watch, though (says the guy whose wife made him sit through about 8 season's worth of Malcolm In the Middle.)

ThailandMaking life in America livable

Hey folks. I've got a few practical questions. I want to make the transition as pleasant as possible for her, so I'm looking for a few Thai amenities.

1) Thai style toilet hose. It's not a home depot item. where can I find one?

2) Good rice maker

3) Online source for Thai television programing. soaps, movies, music, etc.

4) She has a Facebook account, but all my machines have an English keyboard. What is the best way for her to type in Thai to her fiends?

5) Anything else I should have on hand when she gets here? (besides a lot of sweaters. Lol)

I'll be honest, I am very concerned she will get home sick or cold and want to go back.  I want to do everything I can to ease her transition to American life.

Thanks

1. Amazon sells them and they are realy easy to install.  http://www.amazon.co...sl_4x2apyw48j_b

2. There are many out there. My wife bought one in Walmart and she loves it.

3. My wife doesn't like to watch Thai TV much. When she does, she uses the iphone app. You can search for it in the app store for "Thai TV". It is free.

4. Google "Thai Keybord Layout" and you can buy the stickers with english and Thai. Also change your keyboard seeting in you computer to add Thai.

5. Find Thai stores for food. We live in San Diego and there are no Thai stores here. We frequent Laos stores and other asian stores. They cary most of the stuff. We also they a trip to LA (Thai Town) everyo other month for food not carred in San Diego. Definately driver's license. My wife never drove in Thailand and it took her 5 months to get her license. Ask for the test in Thai, it maybe available.

This is advise a friend of mine gave me that helped us: "Remember that she is going to feel home sick. It is normal. Neither you or her have done nothing wrong. It is normal to feel that way. Support her, listen to her and try to do your best to make her feel at home. Eventually, she will feel at home." It was true for us. After 4-5 months, she started to realize that this is her new home and she started to doing thing to make it her own. Encourage her to decorate her house and make it her own. This is just some advise I got that worked for us. Goodl uck to the both of you.
