CanadaShort Term Insurance for Canadian in US
QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Apr 1 2009, 03:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
How foolish would it be to walk around without medical coverage for 50 days? That was my plan... But I have little to no understanding of how the US medical system works. Is it so stupid expensive that if I need to go to a doctor once in those 50 days I would be better off getting coverage? Or maybe... is it not legal to walk around without coverage? That would be kinda weird, but I've heard weirder things...

Honestly, I'm 21 and I haven't been in a hospital since the day I was born. I don't think I'm going to need one...

Nope u dont have to have insurance, millions of Americans do not!! Just see a Dr isnt going to bankrupt you, but if you get into an accident and rushed to hospital will!

CanadaCrossing a land border
I went across Maine when I entered the USA back in Dec 2004. Went with a Uhaul truck!! I drove up to the POE officer, told him Iwas there to activate my cr-1 visa,he said, ok, go pul lup to one of the stalls and go inside. Parked, went inside, I was the only person there!! Walked up to the Customs dude, gave him my inventory list (all the stuff in the Uhaul truck, just put into a word document using "tables" nothing fancy) He looked over the list and sent me over to Immigartion. I gave them the Brown envelope. They looked it over. They had to make a few phone calls to ensure they did it properly. Asked a few basic questions, fingerprinted me, and put aink stamp on the opposite page of the visa Mtl put in my CDN passport, and that was it!! They kept al the contents of the brown enevlope, gave me back my passport (never showed them the xray) and that was it for Immigration!! Went back to Customs dude, he said everything was OK and off I went. They never looked inside the truck. Did not take that long. Very easy process. That was my experience. Best of luck

I'm sure you did---but I bet it had to do more with visiting PRIOR to the process starting!

never heard about being "encouraged to visit" during the process. usually more along the lines of being extra cautious and bringing ties to Canada with you

If u waited until June 2nd to enter the USA and activate the visa, you could then get a 10 yr greencard!! Whats a few more months, that means more tim hortons!! lol

good ol lawyers, lol Been a fair share of horror lawyer stories on VJ!! We used one---had not found visajourney!! She was ok, but not worth the $2500 plus the filing fees, oh well! I had a good laugh when she contacted us, and said for $1000 she would file the I-751 (which u will do down the road) Took me all of 10 minutes to do,lol

Well it depends!! Some take a few days, some have taken almost 2 weeks!! At one time, you used to get the vuisa the same day,but that is long past! SOME have had luck and asked very nicely and gotten the visa the same day or next! Doesnt hurt to ask, and if it were I, I would mention that ur husband came up,and u have the baby, lol but thats me! Doesn't hurt to ask, all they can do is say no!!

The Canada Forum here on VJ, tends to be a bit slower on Weekends, but full of bee hive activity during the week! I highly caution you ongoing to the Off-topic forum on VJ, you will be surprised on what some people write about, guess many like getting a rise out of others, but were a very polite and fun bunch here.

And if ya didnt know, you can collect EI--or maternity benefits in the USA, if you would have qualified for them in Canada.

As well, you prob checked off the box on the DS-230 for a SSN card. Well be prepared that it most likely WON'T show, lol! After about 10 business days (after u get to the USA) head down to ur local SSN office and re-apply! You can down load the form off of SSN.GOV http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html helps speed up the process at the office. Ensure u bring your passport with the visa in it. Your actual greencard should arrive approx 1 month after u enter the USA. You normally get 1 or 3 welcome letters, then ur greencard appears a few days after, but its different for many!

At the top of the page u can see REVIEWS:EMBASSY/USCIS click on that, select CANADA, and ur set!! Will see piles of reviews from Montreal and vancouver. Keep in mind some will be k1, k3. http://www.visajourn...views/index.php As well on the search engine on VJ, put in Montreal reviews etc etc

Interview for 99.99999% of people is the easiest part. Interview itself is VERY quick, like less than 10 minutes with very basic questions asked! And no requirement for the USA spouse to attend the interview, mine did not. Most of ur time at the consulate is spent waiting for ur # to be called

As well check out http://www.visajourn...ndex.php/Canada Welcome to VJ

other tips: Arrive early!! It may say 0900,but doors open up around 0730! many Vjers get their before 0700 and line up! you take an elevator upto the floor, and at that floor, the elevator OPENS from the REAR,lol You will need to purchase a return prepaid envelope to give them, so they canmail back your Cdn passport with Visa in it!! (ensure ur Cdn passport is valid for more than 6 months I belive, longer the better) Bring a book to read. NO big bags or electronics!!! I used a 13 file plastic accordian binder to put my stuff in!! Keep ur interview letter handy, as security guards will want to see it!! others will chime in!!

I really want to go back to school too! Eventually... I'm graduating in June with a BA and I'm considering getting my MA in international studies... OR I'm also considering community college to get my paralegal certificate. I've always wanted to go to law school but it's so pricey and I'm not sure if I'm smart enough blush.gif Grades shouldn't be much of a problem, but I know i'll have to write some kind of standardized test... for getting my MA I think its called a GMAT? Not sure about college... I assume Canadian university credentials are pretty equivalent to American ones, I have friends going to Law school in the US next year with the same degree as me.

Good luck with that ring ChimCham wink.gif

Its not that much of a pain, lol you just need good marks!! There are some private schools that have fewer pre-reqs, but they cost more $$$$$$$$$$$

I should mention too, that their are LPN programs as well (just as their is in Canada). Some hospitals have really scaled back on LPN's, some have not!

Haha. I see you down there, Flames. laughing.gif

Actually, I'm looking forward to seeing your response because I'm thinking I might like to go back to school too. I'm a sucker for punishment, I guess.

In community college, you find a wide range of ages!! I'm 36, and probably the avg age is in the high 20's, early 30's!! We have a big handful of students in their 40's,and I know of 1 that retired with AT&T with 30 yrs,and is now in school with me!!

With the ADN degree, the nursing portion is usually 2 years (4 semesters) but your pre-reqs are another 2 or 3 semesters before that, so can be easily completed in 3 yrs! And some programs you go right through the summer, some you don't. Some are very flexible and offer weekend programs, and even online!! My school offers an online class---you do the lectures on line, bu tof course have to attend lab and clinicals in person! Most highly recommend you don't work that much, as there is a lot of studying. But I know many students that work part time and even full time and do well--just have to be able to set a schedule and go with it!! You will find Community colleges lot less $$$$,but of course they can be difficult to get into!! They tend to take ur GPA based on the pre-req courses, plus most you write an entrance exam--usually a TEAS or HESI exam--(just different companies that sell them) they are usually contain a few different testable sections--usually, Science, math, english and reading, and you get scored on it. And if you were lucky like me--my school WAS, first come first served, lol, but we were the last class, and now it is competitive.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2009-03-22 11:46:00
CanadaSchool?
lol!!

Well it all depends on the school!! As you will find out, every state does things their own way!! So what may work for one person, may not work for another!!

I was able to get the in state tuition rate right from the start, as they based my residency on my wife's status (she is the yank) and since she had been in VA for longer than 1 yr (I had to prove this by showing a past VA tax return) I got the instate tuition rate! But check with each school. I attend an State College--Northern Virginia Community College, and obtaining my Associates degree in Nursing (RN).

As well they may ask you to get a transcripts of your Canadian high school transcript or ur cdn university transcipt and get it evaluated! I had to get my high school transcript evaluated and I used this company http://www.education...g/procedure.htm they were excellent, very fast turn around----I had the evaluation back, before they had even cashed my cheque!!

I just re-read ur post, and see ity is for nursing as well, cool. I assume you were working on a BSN, as thats pretty much the only route in Canada--both my younger sisters are Rn's (BSN) back in Canada (they went to UofS) They now reside in Calgary and Kamloops.

In the USA, one has 3 main routes---Diploma, ADN(associates degree) and of course your BSN! Majority of nurses go the ADN route as it is shorter and usually less $$$$$, then go on and get their BSN--and let their employer pay for that, lol

If you already have a BSN in another field, they do have whats called an accelerated BSN,and it takes as little as 1 year I belive, but most of those courses are very intense!

Lot of Nursing school for ADN and BSN. Some are VERY, VERY, $$$$$$$ like over $10000 a semester. Me at Community college will pay a grand total of around $6000 + books for the whole program! And that included the pre-reqs to get into the program!. So one has to shop around.

So phone around to the various schools and see what their requirements are. A great forum for nurses is http://allnurses.com/ and if ya click on REGION, it will take you to whatever STATE your moving to, and you can ask questions their about schools.

And the hiring has really SLOWED down here in the DC area. I have chatted with a few recruiters, and they told me to call back closer to grad in May, and they are not sure if they will be doing any hiring!! Yes some students have gotten jobs already, but not many!! Thanks to the economy, the census in the hospitals are way down, and nurses are gettign sent home if not enough beds are being occupied! I'm sure we wil all find jobs eventually, but the hiring is not as rapid/easy as it has been in the past!

CanadaMedical question
Well the Dr not checking, doesn't that concern you at all? One pays $$ for a physical, and then he does nothing! I guess many just think its one less hurdle to deal with, but here is Dr. that is suppose to be looking out for your health, and it just seems it is one big $$$ grab! Oh well, lol back to my studies, Neuro exam tomorrow.
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2009-03-25 14:10:00

personally i would rather have a complete physical and find out something is wrong in canada, than find out in the USA, especially if you do not have very good insurance coverage in the USA.

CanadaMedical question
Your paying big bucks, so the more they do, the better it is for you! I had mine in Halifax (which they no longer do),and it was a complete physical, except for the prostate check. Dr doan was pretty complete in his assessment. I dont consider a physical assessment a violation, lol if it is, something is deeply wrong. lol

CanadaHypothetical Question
Guess 1 could wait close to 6 months, then activate and then coem back to Canada. or if Mtl gives u a date "ask" if you can have it later. BUT ask if they can give u a confirmed date that way. We had 1 member that postphoned her cr-1 interview (was it neiks???) and it seemed to take forever to get another interview date! I'm not sure why she could not have had the baby say on a Tuesday, and be at the interview on Wednesday? Jezz!! lol!!!!
Flames9_RNMaleCanada2009-03-26 14:43:00
CanadaHypothetical Question
Yep,others have done that with a Cr-1 visa! As long as it isn't too long of a stay in Canada.
One doesn't have to activate the Visa right away either--U have like 6 months to do that! Normally from the time u activate the visa at the POE, until u get the actual wallet sized greencard is 1 month. U prob checked off the box on the ds-230 to get ur SSN, BUT majority of the time (well at least often), the SSN doesn't come, and one has to re-apply at ur local SSN office (don't need the actual wallet sized greencard to do that, ur cdn passport with visa in it will suffice)

If u activated ur CR-1 about 6 months priort to ur actual move, you should be good to go!

CanadaVancouver Medical & Interview
There have been a few (maybe many) that have done it onthe same day of their interview with success!! it is NOT the end of the world if things go haywire and you dont complete the Medical before the interview! You will goto the interview as scheduled, but they just wont issue you the visa UNTIL you have had the medical! But of course that is not the preferred route.

Man, its Thursday, lol!! This question gets brought up a zillion times on VJ,lol Majority have NO problems, some do get brought into secondary for more questions, and ya a few do get denied! I traveled monthly from Halifax to DC without a problem. I had ties to canada with me, but they never asked to see them! My advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer
2) Be confident in ur replies
3)keep ur response short and to the point, dont tell ur life story!!
4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!
5)pack light! No job resumes with you
6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)
7) Always be polite, being rude isnt going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!
8) have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didnt lie! Refer to #1

Never noticed a difference in the questioning before filing the petition or after. Best of luck

No bearing whatsoever; you need to be in the US to file an AOS.

Yes I realize that much, its not about applying for AOS while outside the country. Its "what if anything happens *before* my wedding to my grandma, will I be allowed to go see her/funeral *before* my wedding and return to the US without it having an adverse effect on my AOS". After the wedding I can get AP (once I've submitted and they've aknowledged receipt of my AOS paperwork) if anything happens.

I'm not trying to skirt the law, however reading the link above about "TN visa professional must maintain bona fide nonimmigrant intent throughout the TN professional's stay in the United States." could mean that ANY plans to adjust status while on TN means you are committing fraud, no?

The big hassle with immigration, every one likes to have their own take on it, same as when your dealing with POE officers, they have their own take as well, which makes it all so frustrating! Best of luck
