I wonder what issues I'll face when attempting to cash a draft from my Canadian bank account into my USC fiance's bank account at WaMu.

That's how I was hoping/planning on transferring my own money own. The whole sum of it, heh.

if its a great deal of $$$--and nice to have anyways--is a custom House acct!! Many of us here have used it for years.

http://www.customhouse.com/ It has been recently bought by Western Union, so not sure if anything will change, so far it hasn't

I've heard mention of that place elsewhere on the site... Is it really necessary?

Yes, it will be a significant amount of money that I'm looking to bring over.

CustomHouse will normally give you a better exchange rate than the bank!! so the $$$ can add up. I have lived in the USA since Dec 2004 and I stil use it. When I'm going to head back to Canada, just transfer $$ to my Cdn Acct! Free to set up and NO fees if you EFT (electronic file transfer)

Does take a bit to set up, but it is very easy and staff (out of Victoria BC) are very friendly. A transaction takes between 3-4 BUSINESS days to complete. if ya need the $$ quicker they do offer a wire service, but does cost a few (never used it)

Is it necessary No? But it wil save you Money! Some USA banks really hate International cheques

CanadaRenting a Car
You really just have to look around. At 1 time every time I checked budget had the lowest prices, but the past few yrs that hasnt been the case. back iN may when we rented a car in Vancouver, Thrifty had the best deal. Sometimes one gets the best deal by going directly to the car rentals site, other times its expedia or travelocity. 2 great sites that I like to use (as they check the big sites for you) are http://www.kayak.com/ and http://www.mobissimo...rch_airfare.php great to use for airfare as well. But ensure you check the actual rental agencies site!! I know on thrifty, they have what they call "The Hot Deal" and sometimes it is pretty decent! As well i never take ANY of their insurance that they offer as my personal auto insurance covers it, and sometimes ur credit card will too (but its very very basic)
As well when you pick up the car, they SOMETIMES offer u cheaper gas price. They say to get the benefits of that, you have to return the car on fumes, lol I have always just filled it up on my own! That way I know exactly what I'm paying for, and it isn't usually that great of a deal if any! Just spend some time going over the rates! Most do give discounts if your a member of Costco, federal employee, etc etc! And ensure they are giving you unlimited mileage!!

CanadaHi everyone!
If you could fly, by the sounds of it you could DCF, MUCH faster route to go and since your married for over 2 yrs, you would be getting a 10 yr greencard, well ur spouse would!!

As well the USA spouse DOES NOT have to attend the interview, interview itself last maybe 10 minutes, and is normally the easiest part of the whole process.

Not that we hate lawyers, lol but in most cases one doesn't require 1! We had 1, what a waste of $$$. In straight forward cases, they are $$$$ proof readers and form gatherers, they don't speed up the process.

How important is it for ur spouse to be able to work in the USA right away?? if so, then you wil want the IR-1 But check out the DCF forum. Best of luck

My grandfather passed away this week after a long hospital battle.

The funeral is this weekend and my family has asked that I fly up to be there. I want to go, but here is the issue: I sent my passport in for renewal 2 weeks ago and it is not processed yet. I only have my greencard. I don't even have a birth certificate because I sent it in like 5 copies for all my immigration stuff.

What are my options? I need to leave TOMORROW if I am going to go.

You do not need the passport to re-enter the USA as your greencard is sufficient....

His question is about entering Canada - not entering the U.S.

Sorry to hear that Brad.

actually I read for both ... he eventually needs to re-enter the USA... I apologize if it was wrong to give him assurance he does not need to worry about that side of the equation.

Not sure about just needing ur greencard. Coming back to the USA i have initially just given my greencard, THEN they ask fo rmy passport!!

I would contact the Closest cdn Consulate, thats 1 reson why they are here!! Sorry for your loss.

Canadamoving question
I used U-halul back in Dec 2004 and all went well. ENSURE you inspect the truck before accepting it!! ie fluid levels, tire pressure (to get better mpg!) U-haul at times has been known to provide less than adequate mechanical vehicles! Mine was ok and had NO problems. u can get the price of the rental on U-hauls website. Mine only had an am/fm radio, so an Ipod might come in useful, lol

I did find it funny that 1 person thought that if I cancelled my cdn passport, it meant that I was no longer a Cdn citizen, lol let them think that way, lol, I have no problems with Amwricans, etc etc, but I grew up in canada, and consider myself Cdn. cheerio

I went to the DMV on Gallows road in Fairfax and they didnt question the letter at all that extended my greencard for 1 year! In and out in like 10 minutes--was painless

CanadaDriver's license or state id
I know when my greencard expired, and my drivers license was coordinated with it. When I took in my letter extending my "greencard" for 1 more year, it was no problem, they gave me a 1 yr drivers license at a prorated rate! Then i screwed up,lol a year later----- my drivers license expired and i forgot! So for like 1.5 months drove around with no (expired)drivers license!! they could have made me start back at square 1--including written and road test and loose my Motorcycle endorsement!! But they took pity on me and juts gave me another.

Our whole purpose in getting him the temporary insurance is for major medical. Basically, if he breaks something or is in a car accident, whatever, he will have coverage for the hospital. Then again, it depeds on what hospital he goes to, as to how much he/we would be charged.

The nice thing about this insurance is that AD&D (accidental death & dismemberment) is also included, which is terrific. Not all temporary insurance or short term insurance includes that.

I see you have a plan in the works!! NICEEEEE!!!!

We can see anyone we want, BUT insurance will cover only certain percentage of the bill. So if one sees a medical provider within the network, that DR/office has agreed to charge only a certain amount. Where as if they are not within the network, they can charge whatever they wish! i thought charging over $300 for 1 cavity was excessive. I called Delta Dental and the lady I chatted with, said that was extremely high! So will just use my wifes dentist, even though it a bit of a drive for me.

When it comes to health care, sure the $$$$$ varies from where u live and to what doctor you see.

I just learned a hard lesson last month with regards to dental, one that I should have known, lol I had yet to goto the dentist (ya, im bad, lol) so I found this site that does reviews: http://www.ratemds.com/social/ found one that had great reviews. Called them and asked if they accepted Delta Dental, which they did. BUT I should have asked if they were a preferred provided--or if they were in the network, which after I got the work done, found at they were NOT! So if they are out of the network, their fees are not capped, and was a HUGE difference in what my wife pays at her dentist, that is within the network!

One doesn't want to get sick without insurance. And there are a zillion health insurance plans out their with varying amounts of coverage, which makes it confusing and frustrating at times!!

I'm a RN student at this time (33 more days, lol) and at 1 hospital where i have had clinical at, you get charged for EVERYTHING!! In the supply room, we have a computer and it has a "scanning gun" much like u see at walmart, and when we get supplies for you, yes even a toothbrush, we scan the bar code, and the patient gets charged for it!

With regards to my wifes pregnancy test she had to get before the X-ray, I belive it was billed at $60, the exact same test at ur drug store is what, $20!!

Maybe I just enjoy living life dangerously? I guess that's a side effect of being young and reckless. Thanks for the heads-up guys, i'll look into it...

Honestly, how much does medical care cost in the US if you have no insurance? What if I fall down and break my arm and have to go to the ER... How much would I pay? Anyone have any idea?

we have insurance--but the hospital gave us the cost if we didnt have insurance--------2005 we went to ER as wife sprained her ankle! After a 3 hr wait and only seeing the Dr for like 15 minutes, included a Xray and a pregnancy test (sop when women taking xray) our bill would have been over $1500

How foolish would it be to walk around without medical coverage for 50 days? That was my plan... But I have little to no understanding of how the US medical system works. Is it so stupid expensive that if I need to go to a doctor once in those 50 days I would be better off getting coverage? Or maybe... is it not legal to walk around without coverage? That would be kinda weird, but I've heard weirder things...

Honestly, I'm 21 and I haven't been in a hospital since the day I was born. I don't think I'm going to need one...

Nope u dont have to have insurance, millions of Americans do not!! Just see a Dr isnt going to bankrupt you, but if you get into an accident and rushed to hospital will!
