VietnamMedical Exam
I am sorry for the confusion. My step-son and mother-in-law would fly into HCMC a couple days before the interview and get the results a day or so before the interview. For some reason I thought it took a week or two for the results.

What is needed to get the medical? Just the interview letter?

My wife used IOM. She had no problems with the medical there, but had proplems with interview prep.

Thanks for your help.

VietnamMedical Exam
Happy Labor Day!

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday. My step-sons interview will be coming up. I need some input on the Medical Exam.

My step-son has to travel from Hanoi and would like everyones input on preferences of which place is best to go for the Medical Exam. How should the exam be booked? Should an appointment be made before traveling to HCMC? Or is it possible for a walk in?

Also how long before the interview should he have the medical done? He will be traveling with his grandmother and they can't stay in HCMC as our family has a lot going on. So they will need to fly to HCMC and have the medical done and return to Hanoi. Then they will have to return to HCMC to get the results and go to the interview. I would assume they would hold onto the results until they can be picked up? Any advice would be helpful on how we should handle this.

Thanks,
Mike

VietnamTimeframe of Visa Pickup
I was just wondering how long it has been taking from the day the pink slip is given until Visa pick up date? We are going to have a very tight timeframe for travel plans due to a family wedding in VN that is 2 weeks prior to interview and limit of time off work, and also flying back to Hanoi. If the interview is on a Wednesday is it possible to pick up the Visa before the end of that week assuming all goes well, due to these circumstances?

Also how long does it usually take for the Consulate to respond to emails lately? I haven't emailed them in a while, so I am not sure what the timeframe is now days.

Thanks for all your help

VietnamInternet Access via wi-fi
Wow, when exactly is this celebration? I will be in Hanoi from Mid October until 2nd week of November. My wife will be taking her son to Saigon for his interview at the end of October. Maybe her mother should be booking her flights now due to the celebration.

I am happy for Hanoi, but the traffic is way too heavy to begin with. I am starting to worry now.

Thanks to all of you for the information. The computer will have Wi-Fi built in, and access thru VPN. So From I have read I get this. Get the converter plug strip. Make sure anything I plug into the strip is rated for 110V-220V and 50Hz-60Hz. If other than listed, I would need the voltage converter (shouldn't need it).

As for internet access, I will be staying at my parent in laws house. It is a new development about 20 minutes outside the city. That is why I was inquiring about the USB device that has internet connection. Anyone have any further info on this type of device? Is it like a 3g connection or something like that? The files I will be downloading will be kind of large (1 MB) Drawing files. I would have to travel to the city everyday and hang out at a cafe or something. There will be a firewall and virus software installed as company policy.

The majority of consumer electronics use universal power supplies. Read the specs on the power supply. If it's rated for 110V-220V and 50Hz-60Hz then it will work virtually anywhere, though you may need an adapter plug in some places (which you can get for a few bucks at Radio Shack).

I have a laptop that's 6 years old, a Digital 8 camcorder that's 10 years old, and a still camera that's 4 years old. The power supplies/rechargers for all of these worked just fine in Vietnam.

Unless your laptop is a real dinosaur, it should have WiFi built-in. Some hotels don't have WiFi. For example, the 4 stars in Hue city have ethernet jacks in the rooms. If you have an ethernet jack on your laptop, bring a Cat 5 ethernet cable, just in case.

As Scott suggested, a firewall and anti-virus software are essential. If you plan on accessing your work files or a company network then you should also use a secure connection - VPN or SSL.

Good Morning,

On my upcoming trip to Vietnam I will need to do some work. I will need to use wi-fi to access working files on my office server in the US. Does anyone have any experience doing so or knowledge? What is my best option of a strong signal that would provide me with consistent connection. I know there is a USB device, but I don't know much about it. It would enable me to access internet anywhere? What is the cost of the device?

Also what about electric issues regarding the laptop. Will I have any issues charging a laptop due to different voltages or plug configurations????? I definately don't want to fry my companies computer.

As always your help is greatly appreciated

Mike

VietnamUsing the Wii in Vietnam
Thank You for all your good advice. We brought a new black version and the Power supply was not dual voltage. We are using a converter and it is working well. The family is having a great time using it.

Step-Sons interview is approaching quickly. Got to have Pink. Isn't it Breast Cancer Awareness month and the color is Pink????????

IndiaVery Important ---- Is your Interview schedule and not recieved Interview letter
; Far as I know is, is that you NEED your interview letter for the interview.

Contact your Consulate/Embassy and ask for a new letter since you haven't received an interview letter YET.

Good luck
