I'm going for my Nexus interview in July. What I don't understand is, do all border crossings have Nexus lines? I usually drive through Queenston-Lewiston and don't think there is one there.

Yeah it doesn't look like there is a Nexus lane at Queenston:

Southern Ontario/Michigan/New York

Sarnia/Port Huron
Blue Water Bridge

Windsor/Detroit
Ambassador Bridge

Fort Erie/Buffalo
Peace Bridge

Windsor-Detroit Tunnel

Whirlpool Bridge
Niagara Falls

Skip the EDL and get a passport!!!!We live in Washington State. the closest DMV office that processed the EDL was 1hr & 15 min away from us. So when we got there at 9:30am & 50 people were waiting. We get a number and we are number 854 EDL applicants. But we look up & it was only 815! We talked to someone else that was waiting and he said he was there before 8am and there were already ppl ahead of him. he was number 823. We ended up leaving at 11am and they only processed THREE PEOPLE. (#818). so i finally convinced the people I came with to leave and just get their passport. Of course they are outraged and kept ranting about what they were going to write on the complaint letter. I dont have a problem with this b/c i dont need it. lol. But they have a good point... its pretty dumb to have only TWO picket windows open that processed a 2 part method (application & interview). Its pretty big & important. It is a security ID for crossing a border. Especially there is an influx of people who are needing this card & they didnt have anyone in rotation to cover lunch breaks & they had 3 more windows that were not open. The office was taking care of FOUR counties & some who drove over an hour to get there. I ended up calling the EDL hotline and offices who are taking appointments only & it said their earliest available time is August 10th.

Well, thought some of you will find this info useful and pass it to your friends and/or family that will be applying for the EDL.

Skip the EDL and get a NEXIS Card! The application is online and 30 days later, assuming you pass the background check, you have the interview at Boeing Field in Seattle. During the interview, they take your pic and prints. Once CBP is done with thier part of the interview, they walk you to the Canadian Customs officer for thier portion of the interview. Your done with everything in less than an hour and its by appointment only. Card arrives in the mail two weeks later.

Used my recently obtained NEXIS Card to visit my fiancee in Vancouver last weekend. While others were waiting in line, I just drove up and presented the card. One or two questions later, you're on your way.

But with a Nexus card, you still need a passport. The point of the EDL is to use in lieu of a passport, is it not?

Once AOS is approved, you are a Permanent Resident of USA, or LPR (lawful permanent resident)...

Not sure what you're called before AOS is approved, good question

Sounds like my experience to get my PA license.... I brought in all the proof from the DMV website and the beeotch working said I was NOT entitiled to a license because my K-1 expired soon. I argued, spoke to the manager and finally they looked at what evidence I brought, couldn't argue with me then!

Thanks Jill. I was really worried I would have to have it all figured out. I can get the medical and forms from my honey in about 10 days from when i fax everything so I'm glad to know I can go that route.

Definitely. After all, you really only need all those things in time for the interview. For the medical appt, you do need your MTL case number (cover page of packet 3)

No you can send back the checklist without actually completing the checklist in the literal sense. I sent it back before my medical and other assorted items were done

Thanks everyone!

My fiance just faxed me a copy of the NOA2.

I'm going down to visit him in a couple weeks, that shouldn't be a problem will it? I don't think it will be, I went down with my NOA1 in April and everything was fine.

Also, it says that it's being forwarded to the consulate listed... lol but there's none listed. I'm assuming it's being forwarded to Montreal smile.gif.

I'm so excited about this, and today I started something new at work, that's always exciting!

No problem, just bring along your usual evidence and you should be fine biggrin.gif

Well we've been checking online everyday to see if they've touched our file and everyday it says they haven't. Today my fiance got a letter in the mail from the Department of Homeland Security stating that our petition was approved and being forward to the consulate. YIPEE!

Question: It says it expires on October 9. That means that I have to attend my interview and receive my K-1 Visa before that time right?

I can hardly contain my excitement. VJ forums are the first to know about this since you guys helped us so much with the application.

Thanks!

.. off to update my timeline.

Congrats! To answer your question, no not necessarily. If your interview is after this date, Montreal automatically extends the expiry date (this happened to me)

PA is not actually a state, but a commonwealth. There are 3 other commonwealth states: Virginia, Massachusetts and Kentucky. smile.gif

Interesting point. I've never understood that - what's the distinction? What makes it a 'commonwealth'? I know it goes back to colonial times. Also, isn't Rhode Island a commonwealth? I thought it has some fancy formal name like "Commonwealth of Rhode island and Providence Plantations". Quite a pretentious mouthful of a name for such a tiny little state.

I never knew that! I am wondering what the distinction is as well. I've always wondered what the "district of Colombia" is. I know it's not a state, so what is it really? How do you explain the district of Colombia? So the people that live there don't live in one of the United States of America?

Other Ontario facts
In the Iroquois language "Kanadario" means "sparkling water " or "beautiful lake".
More people live in Ontario than in any other province and 90% of that population is in the southern part.
Water covers about one-sixth of the province.
Dr Banting, one of the 2 gentleman who discovered Insulin, was born in Alliston, ON - the same town my little sister was born in!

Again, has anyone moved after their status has changed (gotten married, changed status)? Are there headaches or snags with this approach I should know about?

Well Kathryn may be able to answer as I thought I saw her mention somewhere you can import your goods duty free for up to 10 years after moving? If you adjust status and go back to Canada to move your stuff, you should not have a problem. Anyway I think Kathryn will be able to help you.

Speaking of food not available in Canada, their are these pita breads by Joseph's, that my stepmom raves about. She can only find them at Walmart in Florida, they don't have them here. So twice a year when they are in FL, she buys a dozen or so and keeps them in the freezer. Apparently they are so soft and fresh and deelish. Anyway, I am going home on Monday for the week so she asked me to order her some from this website

Ketchup, soda/pop don't bother me in the US.... they do taste a bit different, but I rarely eat them, so it's not something I'll miss.

I think the one thing I'll miss is the Ontario grown produce in the summer. NYC doesn't have very good produce and it's much more expensive. Oh, and PC brand. I love President's Choice Blue Menu products... I'm sure I'll be fine without them... but they will be missed.

Something about cheese curds, fries and whatever else is on it just seems like it would taste horrid. So has it alwyas been around outside of the french community? I just didn't remember it in the 80's at all...

I didn't call them about our I-130 - but the wait times were not as long at that point. There is no reason why you can't call - don't know that it will help at all.

Your situation seems very similar to mine when I was in that stage. My husband was in the states and I was in Canada and of coarse you can't dial that 1 800 number from up here. Well....my husband does not like to phone people and wasn't too 'rushed' to call for me, so I drove to the border (buffalo) went to the nearest phone booth and called (I was in a very loud grocery store!!) I got to speak to someone but in order for me to get any answers or to put in a request to find out what's happening (since it had been longer than so many weeks since any contact with NCIS), they required my husband...the American...to call. So my whole trip to the states was a waste. So then, I had my husband call me on the cell phone while he was at the pay phone, he called them, and requested info, they said we will be contacted within 60 days about our inquiry.....5 days later I got my approval!!! So, if it's been a long time (not sure of exact time lapse) since they contacted you last, your spouse can call from US to request an inquiry. But GOOD LUCK and hope it gets to you soon.

Oh gosh... you drove to Buffalo to use the pay phone! Did you tell the border guards when they asked the purpose of your trip: "I need to use the phone" laughing.gif
