CanadaWar Deserters told to leave Canada..
QUOTE (Galateia @ Jan 7 2009, 01:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
This worries me, as my husband is mostly likely going to be working under a 3 year contract as a psychologist for the Air Force. We have been told that if he is 'deployed' it will be for only 3 months out of those 3 years and that he will not be on the 'front' as his job is to deal with the pilots who have PTSD, etc.

How likely is it that the military will pull a fast one and say "Yep, we agreed to 3 years, but guess what! You have to work another 3 years because we decided that's what we want to do"?

If you create a contract for X number of years, it is immoral for the employing body to force you to work longer than those agreed-to number of years.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

That depends. Did he join the Air Force, or is he a contracted civilian? If he's civilian, his contract is up when its up, he can renew if he wants, but, if he actually joins the Force, all military contract law applies.

Age out for volunteering for US military is now 42, so I guess the draft age would be as well. If you were previously a service member, you can be recalled, as someone else mentioned until age 60.

Since James and I met, the Marines have come knocking on his door twice. Both times they asked him to re-up, but both times he was not fit for service. First time he was undergoing cancer treatments, and second time (shortly after the 9/11 attacks) he had just finished cancer treatments. He managed to not have to go back because of cancer. Lucky him? I guess. Of course, he's not 60 yet, and he'd heard that some of his older buddies he served with before had been recalled to go to Iraq. They were looking for ANYONE with combat experience. Didn't matter if they had a beer belly and no hair...well...no hair is kinda the style in the Marines anyhow wink.gif

But anyhow...I have no sympathy for any of the deserters. When you sign up, if you don't know what you're getting into, you're an idiot. Plain and simple. You sign up to be a soldier, then be a soldier, don't run and hide to the neighbours when you decide war just isn't right. You should have thought of that before you stepped into the recruitment office. Man (or Woman) up and do your fricken job or pay the consequences. I do feel bad for the kids though, they didn't ask for this.

CanadaEligibility for Direct Consular Filing?
The USC would have to be a legal permanent resident in Canada in order to qualify for DCF.

You can check their consular website for more info http://www.consular....y.gov/index.asp

CanadaThe best route to follow for a Canadian marrying an American
The plan is for you to live in the US then, rather than him move to Canada?

Quickest legal route is probably the K1 fiancee visa. Next option is CR1 spouse visa. The K1 you get married in the US AFTER you get your visa. CR1 you get married whereever, and THEN send in all the paperwork to petition and apply for the visa. And that takes about a year. No idea on the timeline these days fr K1, probably a couple of months quicker, but not by much is my guess.

With the K1 you can't work after you enter hte US for a few months, until you have applied for adjustment of status. Nor can you leave the US until after you have Advance Parole. Well, you can leave, but they won't let you back in.

CR1 you will be a legal permanent resident, and within a couple of weeks will have your SSN and can start working pretty much immediately after arrival.

Read the Guides tab at the top of the screen.

CanadaMarried in the US while visiting, what next and when?
Why would you bother with the K3 at all? Seriously, the CR1 is the superior visa, and takes the same amount of time, but will cost you $1010 LESS than the K3.

K3 really makes no sense whatsoever these days.

CanadaMarried in the US while visiting, what next and when?
I'll fourth the suggestion for CR1. By far the best option with the least hassle, and least cost.

CanadaWhat would it happen to my RRSP, RESP if I am no longer a Canadian resident?
Check with a financial advisor before you do anything with them. Before I left Canada I spoke with an advisor who did some research for me and found out the the state of North Carolina does not allow an NC resident to have foreign investment managers, which is basically what the administrators of your RRSP is. I cashed it out after I moved here, on Jan 1 for the next year's income so I wouldn't get dinged too bad for income tax in the US. But we did anyway tongue.gif
RebaFemale02009-01-26 07:04:00
CanadaHow long can I stay in the US on Maternity Leave (canada)?
If you get married, you can sponsor your husband to move to Canada, as a spousal sponsor, you do not have to have a particular level of income to show, you just need to show them that you have a job and a home basically.

If you file "out-land" application, they're currently taking anywhere from 3 to 9 months to complete. DO NOT file "in-land" they take 3 times as long, and your husband will not be able to work at all during that time.

Someone already posted the link to Road to Canada. ALL the info you will need is there for Canadian immigration, and the forms are available to download from the CIC website.

CanadaLady getting married, will travel. Helps!
Yeap, if the plan is to get married, and then return to home country, there is NO FRAUD whatsoever, and this option is perfectly legal. I did it myself and the interviewer at the consulate didn't even bat an eyelash about it.

CanadaLady getting married, will travel. Helps!
Just be careful that when you travel to the US to get married that you don't have any of the frillies with you, otherwise they may deny your entry because they'll suspect you'll be staying illegally. If you plan to be wearing a frilly gown for the ceremony, buy it down there after you arrive.

CanadaEmployment Discrimination in the US
What floor do you live on? You might still survive even without a parachute. I read about a guy who fell I think it was 14 stories and survived. My hubby jumped out of a plane once when he was in the Marines and his chute didn't open. He survived. Spent a while in hospital though. wink.gif

When I got my EAD here I registered with a couple temp agencies in the area, and one never ever ever called me back. Never. And the other I took their tests, and whatnot and they told me about an interview and gave me bad directions to the place. I spent 20 minutes driving around town while talking on my cell phone with the agency trying to figure out where I was supposed to go. She refused to give me the phone number for the company so I could get directions from them. I missed my interview and cursed the woman on the phone and told her thanks but no thanks, I'll find a job on my own. She seriously did not know street names of her own home town so could not tell me how to find the place tongue.gif

I see two problems...

1. Americans do prefer to hire other U.S. citizens.

The company where I work now, they hire people who know people already at the company. Myself included, I suspect I was given an interview only because I already knew one of ladies in IT, just barely really, but she said I'm not a horrible person.

Anyone else that I've noticed to be hired since I have, they all know somebody already within the company.

Difficult however to do if they don't even call you in for an interview because your resume is foreign.

It's not that I don't like obama, it's that usually when democrats get into office taxes go up and if you live somewhere like New Jersey or California, that is the last thing you want to see happen! sad.gif

Apparently in Virginia too, and trust me they tax on everything here for what they like to call Personal Property Tax.

Virginia has some serious taxation but it's not as bad as New York. For example, if you drive a car, they'll tax the street; if you try to sit, they'll tax your seat; if you get too cold, they'll tax the heat; and if you take a walk, they'll tax your feet. laughing.gif

That is too funny lol.

I know this whole having to pay tax on your vehicle every year blows my mind.

last time I flew I brought back on of those tins of heinz ketchup.. lol.. I packed it in my suitcase.. and we went to a small airport where they check through everyone's bags.. I wished I could have seen their face when they saw the tin of ketchup laughing.gif

I had brought my laptop bag with me (you know.... the rolling carry-on bag kind), along with two bags of checked luggage. ohmy.gif Inside the laptop bag I had stuffed bags of Uncle Ben's Natural Select rice which you can't get here. I knew as soon as it went through the scanner at Security that I'd get dinged so I was prepared. The guy tells me he's going to go through it then yells over to his buddy at the scanner for all and sundry to hear.... "It's rice, Gene." laughing.gif I didn't care. If they moved away from home they'd do it too. Oh. And my checked bag full of goodies was searched also. Whateva. Do what you gotta do. Just don't mess with my groceries. laughing.gif
