Thanks folks for the tips.

I guess I'll use my married name, and just send my passport ID page with my maiden name.

I filled out the forms in my married name, used ID with my maiden name, and had no problems.

CanadaMarriages and Weddings for K1-ers
We had a full religious ceremony (20 people in total were there) at a mansion 6 days after I came to the US.
(I had a ceremony we tend to advise against here on VJ -- you know, don't book anything until you have the visa in hand... whistling.gif whistling.gif )

We had a reception right afterwards for the Oklahoma side of the family.

We then had two Open House receptions in Canada for my family and friends in September of the following year. We took our wedding outfits and our pictures and had a great old time. smile.gif

And what is this about his interview being rescheduled soon? He has to go BACK!? Does he live in Montreal?

I'm sorry you guys have to go through this - just not right.

I'm so sorry ladyjane!!

What the heck is a CV?

Curriculum vitae - translation = resume - go figure!

I know I am late to the discussion, but a CV is slightly different than a resume.
QUOTE
A curriculum vitae (singular), meaning "course of one's life, is a document that gives much more detail than does a resume about your academic and professional accomplishments. Curricula vitae (plural) are most often used for academic or research positions, whereas resumes are the preferred documents in business and industry.

My best wishes to FEW and LadyJane that you get this resolved sooner rather than later, smile.gif

I didn't say you did say you were using it, I was merely pointing out the law.

If you check the website for your provincial healthcare office, there will be information there about what you are supposed to do should you leave the province/country. On the OHIP website (I'm originally from Ontario) they state you are to send them a letter to notify them that you are no longer an Ontario resident as of your date of departure.

Ok, no problem. Please accept my apology.

Thanks for the information. The problem was, I was never aware that I had to check it in the first place. Hopefully it is not too late? Do you know how long I would have to live in Ontario if I were to move there to get it back again?

Just to answer your question about eligibility, I found the following here http://www.health.go...ligibility.html

QUOTE
You must have Ontario health insurance to use Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded health care services. You are eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if :

* You are included under one of the following categories :

o you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant, convention refugee, or are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act

o you have submitted an Application for Permanent Residence or an Application for Landing and have been confirmed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as having satisfied the medical requirements for landing
o you are a foreign worker who holds a valid work permit or employment authorization which names a Canadian employer situated in Ontario and your prospective occupation, and is valid for at least six months
o you are a foreign clergy member who will be providing services to a religious congregation in Ontario for at least six months
o you hold a Temporary Resident Permit or Minister's Permit with case type 80 (for adoption only), 86, 87, 88 or 89
o you are the spouse, same sex partner, or dependent child (under 19 years of age) of a foreign clergy member or eligible foreign worker who is to be employed in Ontario for a period of at least three consecutive years
o you hold a work permit or employment authorization under the Live-In Caregivers in Canada Program or the Foreign Domestic Movement
o you have been issued a work permit or employment authorization under the Caribbean Commonwealth and Mexican Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program administered by the federal department of Citizenship and Immigration
* and you make your permanent and principal home in Ontario
* and you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residency in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residency)
* and you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period

To follow up what flames said earlier, I did have to fill out a form stating that I was no longer a Canadian resident when I filed my Canadian 2004 Income Tax Return, because my chartered accountant contacted Revenue Canada to ensure that we were filing it properly and they stated that I needed to fill it out. It's not a hard form, just checking off stuff and confirming that the country I moved to now considers me a resident for tax purposes. Wasn't a big deal.

Oh, and I had to go to the emergency room on my last trip to Canada for a gall bladder attack (sweet Lord that hurt so much!) and my insurer here in the US did not pay for a penny of it, as far as I could tell. And we had to pay $400 upfront before I could even be seen. Because of this I did not go to the emergency room again a week later when I fell and hit my elbow. I waited until I came home, got it x-rayed and found out I had been walking around with basically a broken bone for three weeks. wacko.gif

CanadaDo I need to file a Canadian Income Tax Return anymore?
I only filed one last income tax return to cover 2004, and then I haven't filed since. I am in the same situation as you (no assets, no pension/RRSP, no income, no property left in Canada). I do have open bank accounts, but I do not keep enough money in them to generate any amount of interest.

CanadaTaxes! Taxes!
QUOTE (Caladan @ Jan 27 2008, 03:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So, I figure there's a few Canadian-American newbies going through filing for the first time as married, with income in both countries, and I can't be the only one that finds the IRS more confusing than immigration.

So here's an open thread where we can collect experiences. I'll start off with a couple questions:

U.S. Taxes:
1) C. has to file U.S. taxes, obviously. He has income earned in Canada before he moved down here, and income earned in the U.S. since he moved down here. Do we count his income earned in Canada as part of his adjusted gross income? If so, what do we do about the exchange rate?

Canadian Taxes:
2) This is sort of dumb, but now that we will file as married, will my income earned here count as income for him on the Canadian tax forms?

Any suggestions on software or forms or a link to a walkthrough would be much appreciated. I've read through the threads here, and am desperately in need of the process being explained in simple English.

when I filed my Canadian taxes for the last time in 2005, I was not asked for Jerry's income figures. (My return was done by a CPA).

CanadaA Question for the Canadians: Do you plan to become a citizen?
I plan on becoming a dual citizen (we want the flexibility of moving between the two countries with the minimum amount of paperwork needed), but I do have concerns about the US cracking down in the future -- this is not out of the realm of possibilities, since they are finally getting off their rear ends about the issue of passports needed to cross the Can/Am border. J and I talked about it when I first read this thread, and he told me that if it ever came down to "renounce your Canadian citizenship or leave" -- we'd leave.

CanadaCanadian Health Care
Once you move to the US, you give up your rights to use Canadian healthcare without having to pay. I had to visit the ER over the 2006 Christmas holidays and I had to pay a certain amount before even being admitted, and was billed for the rest after getting back home. 'T'isn't cheap!

Each province has their own rules r/t length of time you have to be a resident in order to qualify for coverage.
For example, here is Nova Scotia's rules:

To be eligible for Nova Scotia Medical Service Insurance (MSI) benefits you must be:

* a Canadian Citizen or “Permanent Resident” (Landed Immigrant)
* a resident who makes his/her permanent home in Nova Scotia and is present in the province 183 days every calendar year.
* You must be registered with MSI to be eligible for benefits.

If you leave Nova Scotia to establish permanent residence outside of Canada your MSI coverage is valid until the day you leave Canada.

If you are a returning Canadian Citizen or a returning "Permanent Resident" moving permanently to Nova Scotia from outside Canada, MSI will provide first day coverage.
