Africa: Sub-SaharanInterview worries....Lg. Age Difference

We have successfully had the NVC approve our CR1 papers. Now, in another week I will have an interview at the Lagos Ng Consulate. The worry is that we have heard horror stories about people who have a big age differences being rejected at the interview, just because of that fact. We are not trying to scam anyone...we love each other very much! We need would love to hear any success stories and/or tips to help w/ this issue - thanks!

Africa: Sub-SaharanNigerians help!

1) Poverty Guidelines are here, not sure if Nigeria accepts co-sponsor but others will chime in. You won't include the baby though the CO may consider that.
2) Embassy wants a current passport that has at least a 6 month validity. He has no proof that you and him were together in the past two years? Problem. Your stamps prove that he was, what proof do you have that he was there with you in Europe at teh same time? Think along that same line to see what you can come up with.
3) He can get his own birth certificate. We already has ours but someone said they paid #2,000. Make sur ehe knows to get a certified copy from his local government like this one:

Notice the stamps.
4)K1s have a different track so don't get confused with the IR1/CR1 crew (there's more of them). Once you get NOA2, you can call NVC in a week or so for your LGS number. WHen they tell you that they have sent the package to the Embassy, then you can track it on DHL. In about a week after it gets to the Embassy, email or call the Embassy. I called them and they emailed me the interview paperwork and date in a few hours. You can download and start practicing forms DS-156, DS-156K, I-134 (those are the three forms he woudl need though I also sent DS-230 just in case tehy ask for it.

Have him study this chart,

Vaccinations are optional for K1 applicants but if he chose to go with it then he can get the shots in advance and take proof with him to the medical exam. If there's a cost savings.

Good luck.

I and another VJer have an interview next month so I am sure we will give feedback.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Gowon, just went through your post on vaccinations. I must have gotten more vaccinations that required. I actually thought Hep A was required. I got Varicella and MMR plus tetanus. I also got typhoid, since i will be going to Nigeria pretty soon. Question is, does getting this shots from your private doc and having a vaccination record in any way reduce the money charged during the compulsory medicals.

Every ones case is unique. It depends on factors such as age and vaccination history. What i did was i went to my doc and had a discussion with him. Before my medicals, i had him give me varicella, MMR , tetenus and Hep A. when i went for my test, i was told i did not need anymore vaccinations.

I will try and scan and upload soon. I went back yesterday to pick my X-ray and results. medical finally over. But moving round in Lagos can be expensive. I decided to put off driving until I get a new license. Had a nasty experience with cops, a day after my arrival. So I always have to cab everywhere I go to. I wish everyone with upcoming interviews the very best of luck and Gods favor.

Africa: Sub-SaharanMedical and Vaccination
Hello every one, I finally went for my medical today. My younger sister dropped me off @ the children's clinic around 10 past 8, this morning, because she works in the area. I met about 5 people there and we all had our names written down. The lady came around at 8:30 am and gave us zenith bank pay in vouchers and instructed us to pay in 12k and make copies of the data pages of our passports. We were also required to have our passport numbers and names written at the back of 2 passport sized pictures. since I only just arrived , I had no no nigerian cash on me, so I took a bike to the money changers opposite southern sun hotel (formerly Ikoyi hotel), after changing money from pounds to naira, I went to the zenith bank opposite the hotel and made the 12k payment. The bank staff were also kind enough to help me make copies of my passport. I need to point out that there is a zenith bank 3- 5 minutes away from the clinic. I took another bike back to the clinic, when I came back the clinic was really full. Lots of people doing medicals for the visa lottery and the Canadian immigrant visa. I Waited about 2 min for the lady at the desk to come back and I handed her my teller from the payment i made, including the photocopies and passport pix. She gave me a ticket number.i was number six. I went first for a blood test, the lady doing the blood test was friendly, in fact they were all friendly, maybe because they are well paid. After the blood test, I went for the X-ray, after which I proceeded upstairs to see the doc. Seeing the doc was quite a wait....my turn eventually came and I went to see the guy. He was nice, asked basic questions all docs usually asked. He asked in particular if I have ever been vaccinated before and if I ever lived abroad. I showed him my vaccination card I came with from England. He took my blood pressure and he told me to go make 2 copies of the vaccination card and that my test was over. I did not need any extra vaccinations. Total cost for me was just the 12k i earlier paid to the bank. When iI came back with the copies of the vaccination record, he said I should come back on Wednesday evening for my results. Very courteous staff, though there is lots of rooms for improvements in the way the process is being organized .i hope this helps.

I will be leaving for Nigeria in 2 weeks time and i will have barely 3 weeks to complete my medical. I just clocked 40 this year myself and i am scared i may also have HBP, though i cycle everyday and my doc has never really raised the issue.

My dad will be 80 in November and we are planning a big party and i also have an exam to sit in Nigeria early December. My other half will be flying in, cos she shares the same Birthday date with my dad. We plan to fly back together after my dads Birthday celebration and and my exams. So, can we choose the date i can leave the country. Sorry its off topic.

This just in from Ginie,

Her husband Kayode went to his medical on Monday and you saw her post previous about that experience. She wrote tonight that she is heavily bogged down with tests and studies until Friday. So I told her I would post what she sent IM'd to me:

Here is her message:
"i wanted to tell you my husband passed the medical and he also wanted me to tell everyone that it may depend on the immunization price on which ones you need....he said some needed 7, he only needed 2! They told him to come pick up the results today and he showed up early and they told him to come back at 4 pm....not sure if that's the actual pickup time for everyone"

Thanks for the info. But did he take vaccinations before now?

My spouse is now getting ready for medical examination. Based on information we get from Nigeria Vjers, we are leaning towards using Children Pratice in Ikoyi, Lagos. Please I was just wondering if any VJ can tell us how many days it will take to complete the whole medical examination ranging from X-ray to vaccinations. Thanks.

Yes, the Childrens clinic is a lot cheaper than the clinic run by Dr Alakija. The owner of the other clinic is sort of a celebrity doctor, so their services are bound to be more expensive. I have called both clinics from my base here and this made me conclude the childrens clinic at ikoyi is a lot cheaper. From my chat with the operator at the childrens clinic, it takes 2 days for every thing, no need for an appointment, just walk in. But you have to come back after 3-5 days or a week for the results. The 21k is for initial tests and check up. If u need more vaccinations, you will pay more than that. I pray they can accept my UK vaccination records, cos i think i am covered.

I'm the petitioner and paid the visa fee, too. I didn't sign it as there wasn't a place for the cardholder. Not sure if the document has changed since Dan & Jenni paid, but there's no mention anywhere on the PDF or in the email of having the cardholder signing the document. There's just a space for the applicant to sign.

The photos were to be brought with you to the interview and not attached to any of the DS forms. Definitely take extra photos just in case.

I must agree that having pictures does enhance my experience of using VJ. It makes the whole visa application process a bit more personal and feel more like one is sharing experiences with real people. It does make a difference. Or maybe i am just a picture person. However, I understand people who are worried about security.

Two pictures I have come to recognise while using VJ, though they are actualy strangers to me in real life, are:

Can a guy add to this? I will.

I noticed most of the posts are from girls/ladies/women. You know what I mean. So here is something from a guy. What do I think about when I miss my missus? I will list two:

Firstly, I go through the pictures of us on my phone. Particularly the one I took of her while she was asleep. Looking all so chilled, reminding me of all the reasons why I am crazy about this woman. I have got one of those PDA phones, with the camera and huge screen that even lets one zoom in to pics. So I get to zoom in and take a closer look. Enough details for now…

Secondly, I think of one particular visit of mine to New York. It was a Friday and relatively quiet at work. By the way, this is in London. Right about lunch time I got an email advertising unbelievable flights to NY. So I called my brother-in-law (her brother in NY) and told him I was going to make a surprise visit, so he could pick me up at JFK. So I left the office, picked up a few things at home and caught a 4pm GMT flight and was in NY by 6.30pm EST. Her bro got me at the airport and we were home by 8pm.

Before I go on, you must understand that my missus is not use to surprises like this. She wasn’t expecting me in NY for another, maybe, 3 weeks. My/our flights are usually booked weeks/months ahead. She says I am a very organized person.

Anyway, so I arrived at the apartment and walked into the living room. I remember she was with a few friends and family watching the BET channel on TV. She said hello to her bro and then froze when she saw me. Then she started pacing backwards away from me and was looking around. I learnt later that at this time she was trying to confirm that every one in the room could knew I was there. She thought I was a ghost or something and was scared.

By this time, I realized or confirmed just how fragile she could be. So I walked up and gave her hug. You know the mushy details. With her slender arms around my neck, her heart still beating and the mixed look of surprise and elation on her face, I knew I would never forget this particular visit. I think of this day quite often.

Not long after this trip, we decided it was better if I moved to the US.

National Visa Center (Dept of State)DS-230 documents for UK beneficiary
Hi all,
I spoke to an NVC operator yesterday and was informed that my DS-230 form and instruction has been sent by mail. Woohoo! However, previous experiences tell me this could take another 3-4 weeks to arrive.
To save time so I can, hopefuly, complete at NVC before Christmas, I will be using James' shortcut. I have also generated my barcode sheet and collated all documents as stated on the DOS website . See below:
  • Completed DS-230 form
  • Barcode sheet
  • Cover letter
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Marriage Termination Documentation
  • Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page
  • Police Certificate(s)

My questions are or I was wondering if you guys can confirm:
  1. Am I missing anything else?
  2. Is there a UK based beneficiary & US based petitioner who have completed at NVC that can advice if I am following the right procedure?

Many thanks.

Hey thanks so much for the advice it's all really useful.

Is there anything else I should know before my interview tomorrow? Any interview tips for the k1? Do they ask a lot of questions in the London embassy?

Also I'm taking cash to the embassy. I remember the fee being around £250 so I'm taking £300 just in case. It's okay that I pay in cash?

United KingdomWhat do I need for my K1 visa interview?

Hi all,

I have my k1 visa interview this Friday approaching and I just want to make sure that I'm ready for it. I've heard that the main reason people get rejected is because they don't have all of the relevant forms.

Currently I have...

1. DS-160

2. All of the police certificates for every country that I've lived

3. My Visa Appointment Letter

4. A receipt for my medical

5. Photographs of myself and my fiancé

6. I-134 Affidavit of support

7. A letter of proof of employment from my fiancé's employer

8. My Passport

QUESTIONS:

I've printed off a fiance interview checklist which I found online which states that I require a DS - 156 and a DS-156 K. But there is no mention of the DS-160 so I'm wondering did the DS-160 replace these forms or do I need to find them and fill them out?

Do I need to bring in a DS-260 as wel as the DS-160?

Do I need skype conversations printed out to prove a relationship with myself and my fiancé?

I only have about 4 - 5 pictures of my fiancé and I. Is this going to be a problem as we didn't spend too much time asking people to take photos of us when she visited?

We don't have a date booked for the wedding as we wanted to wait until we were approved. Will the embassy find this unusual?

Is there anything missing from my list of prepared documents?

Thank you so much for any help. I'm quite nervous about the interview and so any advice would be great.

Jay

Hello,

Apologies if you have heard this before, but can anyone who is also a beneficiary of an I-130 tell me on average how long it takes for it to be completed? I mean to the point at which I am able to travel to the US. I'm a UK citizen, my husband is a US citizen, USCIS received our I-130 application on 9th October 2013 although we sent it off at the beginning of September 2013, anyway...

I feel like I'm just left in limbo, it's hard to plan anything when you don't know what's happening. Yes I am aware of the precarious processing times.

Could anyone shed some light?

Thank you.

Europe & Eurasia (except the UK and Russia)Need Help from Spaniards!
Im afraid i cannot help, since i filed in the emabssy in london. however, why don't you just get as many documents prepared as possible. Fe de vida is for free.
Also, if you are missing some documents, they will tell you the day of the interview, and then you only have to post them to them, dnt need to interview again...

Great! I am ready to go then! So happy!

Getting married in Spain means you are registered here already: according to the Civil Register officer I talked to it means your civil status as a Spaniard will automattically be changed in the register and shuld you ever need to get the certificate, that information would show from then on. On the ministerio de justicia website there is a long PDF from the official bulletin of state where this is contemplated.

Reading your posts I am understanding that this is really just a diffeence of being married or not that doesn't or does require you to present such document. Now I understand that it doesn't matter where you get married. The marriage certificate rules out the Fe de Vida y Estado. You only need it if you want to bring over a fiancée, right? And it will only show that you are married if that marriage is legally registered in Spain. That is what I feared the most. Having to delay my process for months in expectation of the acknowledgement of the marriage over here to be able to get what I thought was a requirement. :bonk:

Thanks a lot!!!!!!

Por cierto, off topic total. St Feliu es por la zona o por el festival de harcore y metal? Un saludo paisanos. Thanks a lot!

All being well I will have a large chunk of equity from the sale of my house in the UK to transfer at some point to the US. Given the direction of travel of the £ v $ it might be best to wait and see/hope that there is an improvement .

AIUI the IRS will not tax me on the income from the sale of a primary property being transferred to the US. If I did it in chunks over a couple of years is there a risk they would revisit that position ?

Also - does anyone know if the forex companies will offer a fixed forward price without any commitment on my part. I'm wondering if I can agree a fixed rate in advance. I'm going to contact a couple this week so any recommendations gratefully accepted.

United KingdomThings I Want to Do Before I Depart These Shores
I'm certainly planning on making the day of emigration something special. For a start I intend flying VA premium economy - sadly can't afford Upper Class :-) Hoping to be travelling with hound in hold too.

I'm really trying to focus on those things/places/activities that realistically I won't ever do again unless I end up retiring back to Europe and it's unlikely that we'd end up in the UK anyway. This is making me think about the possibility/inevitability of being homesick at some point I suppose.:(

United KingdomThings I Want to Do Before I Depart These Shores
I was pondering today. My partner the USC is actually an expat Brit herself so I've had many years of seeing what her trips back to the UK are like. Usually a blur of visiting friends and relatives. We've had the odd weekend away in Europe but as her pattern of work is changing that is going to get even more difficult.

So I'm under no illusions what my trips will be like. Fortunately we share many friends so at least that bit won't be duplicated in the future. I've therefore been thinking about what things I really should be doing that I probably won't have time to do in the future. Here is my rather odd list of things I'd like to do before I go - in most cases it's highly unlikely I'll do them ever again.

1) Try to arrange a visit to my old school and take some photos
2) Visit my old home town and take a lot of photos of my old stamping ground. I've not lived there in 30 years and haven't been back in at least 20. Streetview is a bit of a nostalgia trip.
3) National Railway museum in York
4) One last trip to Helsinki - spent 15 years working for a Finnish company and been there many many times and still have people I consider friends there
5) Try to see more of the sites in London - lived here for 30 years and like many people dahnnn sarfff never bothered to do the tourist things
6) Quick weekend in Paris
7) Trip to Brussels with my partner when she comes over in the summer - that's her old stamping ground and she wants to take her kids.

Those were just some odd ones - you planning on doing anything similar ?

United KingdomThings to take care of before the move
A few financial things

1) Depending on age/your circumstances it may be worth him continuing paying NI contributions. Certainly for me it means a cheap way of getting the pension benefits.

2) Make absolutely sure that all credit card and other financial agreements are completely cancelled (assuming he doesn't want them) and not just dormant.

3) Make sure the revenue knows of the change in status
